Hello everyone I am currently a high school sophomore. During the beginning of the first semester of freshman year I was out for over a month in the hospital and eventually got diagnosed with a chronic disease. Usually being a high achieving student and athlete, I was destroyed when I came back to be failing all 7 of my classes. Although my counselor said it was impossible to pass 9th grade with the end of semester being a week away, I worked my butt off and ended up with a 3.14 gpa...dismal I know, but I ended up passing 9th grade. The following semester I finished with a 3.85 and this semester I ended up with a 4.14. The problem is, I am obsessed with getting into USC's ba/md program, and my gpa will be overshadowed by these other amazing applicants and that I have no chance. Will they be understanding of my situation although the standard is set high or should I focus on getting into uc schools since they dont count freshman year, although my heart is set onto USC's ba md program? Please help! :)

Hopefully I can be of service since I am familiar with the program and attend 'sc.

The program isn’t all about having the very best grades or SAT/ACT scores: an acquaintance of mine got invited to the interview with a 2000 SAT. They look at each application holistically. If they see something unique in your’s or see a fiery passion, you never know!

That being said, you have a great upward trend! Continue to get the best grades that you can and be sure you are passionate about medicine!

You have two more years! Apply to the program then and wait and see.

Thank you 10ninja, you really bolstered my confidence. I guess I’ll just bulk up on APs next year. Apart from practically living in a hospital environment for over a month, I have done volunteering at a local hospital and hope to get some shadowing and more exposure this summer, and that should give me a clearer view of if I want to pursue medicine. Again thanks and I web you the best at USC! :)

wish* Oops, sorry! :)

No problem!
Just remember, you are just a sophomore! You have so much time to realize why you want to be a doctor, get some good SAT/ACT scores in and bulk up on the gpa. Just try your best; that is all you can do!
