Unweighted Ranks and Academic Index - Ask The Dean

According to the Ask the Dean answer, colleges freely interchange W and UW GPA/rank when finding the applicant's AI.

I'm in the most rigorous courses possible + I'm one of 10 freshmen in a class of 400 to be put in Pre-calc. My UW GPA is 3.852 because I've gotten straight A's all year and straight B's in Pre-calc. My school doesn't weigh grades or ranks, so I'm barely in the top 10%.. like number 39 or something.

My AI would be completely different if my school weighed grades, since I'm pretty sure I'd be in the top 3%. Doesn't this seem unfair?

Yes, and that is exactly what my school does. It sucks, but there isn't anything to be done about it...

It is unfair, but colleges take into account the "rigor" of your schedule when they look at your application.

Most top schools are more concerned about your UW Gpa and the courses you took to get it.....go on the accepted student threads as well as the CDS for the colleges you are looking at; you can get a good idea of which ones prioritize GPA v. the ones that prioritize class rank......then you will have a better idea of which schools you will have a better shot at being admitted......

What about academic scholarships or other programs that look at GPA?

Any other opinions?

When you apply to colleges, ask your counselor to make a note of what your weighted rank might be in their rec.
