Unweighted GPA Calculation

At my school, unweighted GPA is based off of A's, B's, etc. on a scale of:

100-93 is an A, 4.0
92-85 is a B, 3.0
84-78 is a C, 2.0
77-70 is a D, 1.0
69- is an F, 0

When I begin applying to colleges, will they use the unweighted GPA assigned by my school, or would they possibly change it to the other scale (100-90, etc)?

If I received a 91 at my school, that would be a B, or a 3.0, but on some other scales, a 91 is an A, or 4.0

Are schools likely to recalculate this GPA?

I don’t think they would recalculate to be honest. My school has the same grading scale as yours. Also colleges you apply to receive a school profile with the grading scale on it, so they are aware of that when making decisions.

Aww. If my GPA were to be calculated on the secondary scale, it would be a 3.85 instead of a 3.6. Oh well.

Sure. And if it were calculated on a scale that goes A = 100-80, B = 79-60,
C = 59-40, D = 39-20, F = 19-0, your GPA would be out of sight!

It makes no sense to recalculate your GPA on another scale. All through high school, your teachers have been grading you knowing what scale they were using. They allotted point values on tests and awarded partial credit, all with the understanding that an A would be 93 or above. It really doesn’t matter very much to me where the numerical cut-offs are on a school’s grading scale. I adjust my test-writing and my grading practices accordingly, and I get pretty much the same distribution of grades, no matter where the cut-offs are.

I don’t get the 4.0 scale. It varies from school to school and my school only uses the 100 scale. Besides, I hear that colleges compare your stats to those kids in your school so it shouldn’t be that big of a problem.

Exactly. I think it really is a strange system and the differences between the 90-100 and 93-100 seem very arbitrary.

As a student from a large public school in South Carolina, I can confidently say that very, very few people from my school will be applying to the same schools and I plan on applying to.

My son’s school has a 4.0 GPA system, but he is taking mostly honors and math is one-year ahead. Unweighted GPA would be 3.36, but weighted GPA (adding 1 point for honors or AP courses, but no bonus for taking math 1 year ahead) is 3.98.

Do admissions offices take this into account? We are trying to find out his place in the class, but we were told that his HS “doesn’t publicize class ranking”. It makes it very difficult for us to decide whether to drop money on tutoring or not.
