Unweighted GPA for In-State admission?

So, I have like a 3.5-3.65 uw gpa, and a 4.07 w gpa. I have a reason for my w gpa being low (I transferred, but my weighted credits didn’t) but have no explanation for my uw gpa except a crappy freshman year. My sat is 2160 (700 cr 710 w and 750 m). I am 19th in my class of 315 ~ 6%. Rank is based on weighted. So would my gpas hurt me?

Woops, forgot to mention that essays were good, so were recs, and I have really good ecs (lots of leadership and awards such as being an eagle scout).

How does UNCCH calculate high school GPA?

For weighted

regular classes: A-4, B-3, C-2, D-1, F-0
honors classes: A-5, B-4, C-3, D-2, F-0
AP classes: A-6, B-5, C-4, D-3, F-0

you mean they recalculate GPA according to the above list? Never knew that.

Yipes, DH is home-schooled, so no weighted GPA at all. We just put down 4.0, because he did well in everything, but we don’t give conventional grades per se.

We’re in-state, in a teeny rural town just north of Winston-Salem. DH’s stats are:

SAT I 2100
Math II SAT II: 790
Latin SAT II: 800
Physics SAT II: 700 (although he was scoring 770-800 on all the practice tests…go figure!)
Very rigorous classical curriculum, including Latin IV and Greek III

how/where would you explain the d?
i’m in danger of receiving one for this quarter (but my unc decision would come out before the quarter grade)…where would i explain this?

what do you think the average oos gpa is?

lololololol, i go to enloe too
my GPA distribution even worse though, 4.9 weighted 3.4 unweighted
2100/2400, 1470/1600
whats my chances

What about a 4.9 GPA ( taken at least 6 APs by junior year) with SAT around 2000, but few extracurricular activities.
I was a member of varsity soccer and Habitat for Humanity club as well as Academic team, but all of those were only in my junior year so I haven’t done much outside of school. Do you think that my good grades would outweigh a lack of extracurricular activities? top 5% in a 450 person class.

Hi! I’ve worked some with admissions programs here at UNC, and I’ve explicitly heard admissions officers say they no longer look at GPA. They consider the grades you made in your difficult courses. So, there is no use in trying to compare the weight of your weighted GPA to your unweighted GPA for admission. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask or message me!
Thanks and goodluck on admission!

Hey guys! I’m a current student here at Carolina and I thought it’s be good idea to create a page to help out any incoming students. Feel free to ask any questions about campus life, academics or anything else!
https://www.facebook.com/groups/295823267278061/

I’m a current first-year student. I attended Enloe High School in Wake County. My weighted GPA was a 4.10 and unweighted was a 3.19. I also had a D and a C on my transcript from math classes I took my freshman and sophomore years. My ACT score was a 29. Embarrassingly enough, I also had to explain why I skipped school and was suspended for it.

Honestly, stats are important but they are interested in how you will leave your mark. If you were able to express yourself well in your essays and your extracurricular and volunteer activities align with some of the values discussed in the written portion of your application you will be fine.

Wake County is very competitive and my school was too; however, A LOT of people got accepted from my school last year.

If you are worried about your GPA but everything else on your app is looking pretty good I wouldn’t stress too much. Keep in mind, Carolina does defer some EA applicants. I was one of those people deferred last year and although it was nerve-racking, I was able to improve my math grade senior year to show effort and improvement. As a deferred EA applicant, I had to send my first semester grades in along with those who were accepted EA. I earned 5 A’s and 2 B’s which most likely played a part in me gaining admission (DON’T START SLACKING OFF NOW). When I submitted my first semester grades I was a little creative in that within the description boxes for each of my grades I would write something quirky yet factual about how I earned the recorded grade in the class for the semester.

Good luck with everything and try to enjoy your senior year!
