Unweighted GPA question

I am just starting to seriously look at colleges for my son. I’m confused about the unweighted GPA. I thought perfect was 4.0. But here on College Confidential, The University of Chicago says the unweighted average GPA is 4.48. What am I missing?

Thanks so much for anyone who can help me. I’m just trying to a realistic shortlist of schools for my son. I tried to search the forum, but couldn’t find anything.

That probably means that UC recalculates GPAs according to their own policy. Most colleges do. Some high schools use a 5.0 scale.
