when UVA looks at GPAs, since the scales vary so much from school to school, what is an average unweighted GPA that they like? (i'm in state so i'm wondering more about that) I calculated mine and at the end of junior year it was a 3.77, but that doesn't seem high enough...

A GPA of 3.77 may be fine. What matters most is how that GPA compares to the GPAs of your classmates and how rigorous your schedule was. Do you know what your rank is?

You can look at UVa's common data set for the current first year class. Students who applied, were admitted and enrolled.

You can see the unweighted gpa.

I'm ranked 18 out of 300.. top 6%. I'm pretty nervous:-/

That's not bad at all!

I don't think C11 is about UW GPAs, because C12 states that the average GPA is a 4.04. The actual average UW GPA is probably not reported because it looks better for UVA to put up weighted GPAs, and I seriously doubt 85% of the people here had UW HS GPAs of >3.75. So a 3.77 is a fairly good UW GPA, but how that relates you to the rest of your class is also equally important.

The GPAs reported by universities are always off. More reliable is the class rank, which measures how well the applicant did in relation to his/her peers.

sorry to but in on this thread but:
my school does class rank based on the numerical average of one's grades i.e 95.12....
because of this i am ranked around 60/540
however, i have a respectable courseload and if the rankings were done on weighted GPA, i would surely be in the top 7-10%
will this hurt my chances or will UVa. realize this and adjust?

Don't worry about class rank too much unless for instate you are out of the top 10% range. There is nothing wrong with a 3.77 - it's an excellent gpa. It will not keep you out is what I'm trying to say

chaudoinker, a rank of 60/540 does not make you very competitive. You may still get in, but you're working from behind...
