I was accepted to LSA about 4 months ago, and was invited to the Honors college. I was wondering how competitive admissions is for the Honors college.

Essay were legit. They got me in LSA... but I didn't put much effort into the regular decision ones. I am putting a lot of effort into the Honors one though.

“Because of Michigans and the nations economic circumstances, the Honors Program went into this years admissions season with much uncertainty, but statistically, the 2009 incoming class of 515 students is very similar to last years. The ratio of in-state to out-of-state students is nearly the same: 63% of the incoming class is from Michigan this year as compared to 65.5% last year. We are experiencing a trend also found in LSA and national college admissions: more women (53%) than men are in the incoming class. Academically, we have another amazing class: our median ACT range is 31-34, very close to 2009s 32-34 range, and the median range for SAT scores for this years class is 1370-1490, compared to last years 1380-1490.”

Contrary to some opinions on CC, it is not a given. According to my mentor, this is the U’s way of trying to lure those admitted to Ivies by offering increased academic stimulation. A friend of mine last year with stats very similar to yours did not get in. This is not to say your screwed. Just make sure you show serious passion in your essays and a real interest in exploring academically.

You WILL get into Honors. I had very similar grades/scores as you did and I wrote my honors essay the night before it was due in 2 hours. There are a lot of super smart kids in honors, but that doesn’t make them all geniuses. You have the right grades to get in, and you will.

And even if you didn’t get in, ANYONE can graduate with honors if they write an honors thesis their senior year. Being in honors freshman/sophomore year does not mean you graduate with honors. You need to do your thesis.

I am currently in Honors and from what I have seen, it doesn’t make much of a difference. So, don’t stress about it. A lot of kids are in it because they want to challenge themselves as well as be guaranteed to live on central campus their freshman year instead of north.

“My friends and I who were admitted to LSA Honors were rejected by all the Ivies we applied to, UChicago, and Duke. Just saying.”

My roommate got into Harvard, Yale, UChicago. Girl down the hall got into Northwestern and WashU. Girl across from her Princeton. Guy above me Princeton as well. Guy two doors over Cornell. Guy across from him Georgetown. Guy in my rival hall (and old high school buddy) Georgetown and UChicago. His roommate Harvard, Yale, Stanford. And those are just the people who have told me. I guess I don’t see your point.
