I'm a track and field athlete and i've narrowed down my schools to UVa and UofMiami from Clemson, Pitt, W&M, FSU, VT, Indiana U, Penn State and others. I'm a 3.8 student and can be lazy at times. Miami offered me 75% athletic and i'll find out how much i receive from academics later this month. Uva hasn't offered me anything yet, but i'll get instate tuition and a little bit of athletic money. I could see myself at both schools, but i'm not sure where i want to go. It's very stressful since signing day is feb 2.

I would go to miami because its a beautiful city and the campus is gorgeous. They have my main major and if i decided to change they have my other back ups. The facilities are okay, but they are a definate upgrade from my highschool. There's no way i'd be bored in my down time between practices and classes. The track team is up and coming and i feel i could be there coaches first big project.

Uva is as everyone knows is Uva. They have superb academics and there facilites are a step up from Miami. The campus is very stereotypical with a suburban setting and a lot of trees and everything is centered around the campus. It's only 2 hours from my house. In reality the only reason i'm considering them is because there coach is one of the best in the country and has signed the number one thrower in the country and would make a great training partner. There academics are strong but i'm a lazy smart guy.

Do i chose a college students paradise or a degree from an ivy league caliber school.

I know it is bad form on this forum to be critical of a student’s writing/grammar, but if your post is representative of your writing ability you would have a tough time at UVA.
That said, I do know something about track programs and I would go with UVA unless you don’t think you would be an impact “player” after a couple of years. I know more about running than field events, and I’m assuming you are a thrower. I just worry about you being able to cut it academically at UVA since you said you are lazy. To me or my kid (who was also a track recruit) this would not even be a choice. I would pick IU over Miami, too.

If you want to live in South after graduation, UVirginia has better reputation. If you want to stay in the midwest, than go with Miami. These are very similar schools, with Miami being rated higher for commitment to undergrad teaching. Of course there is something to be said about going away to college, which wouldnt happen at UVirginia. In fact may feel a lot like high school.

swish is I believe a William and Mary(great school) person who seems to knock UVa any chance he gets. UVa is certainly not like high school and he embarasses himself by even suggesting that. UVa and Miami are both very good schools so go with what feels best. Had a son at UVa and he loved it.One of his roommates first year was in track and field and did very well there in his sport. Good luck with your decision.

Oops- my fault, I just was thinking of Miami(OH) and how similar it was to UVirginia.

Sev- calm down and relax. I suggested the high school experience b/c I again misread “2 blocks” instead of “2 hours”. Struggling with reading while watching football game. I dont knock Virginia, I give my honest perspective. It feels like knocking b/c most Virginia people feel it is between Princeton and Yale. I grew up very close to C’ville and am quite used to the attitude of most Wahoos. It is possibly the best research State U in the country, but I have a bias towards smaller schools for undergrad, larger for grad school.

swish, thank you for your explanation and for explaining your bias. Both UVa and William and Mary are great and we are lucky to have these schools in Virginia. Most kids discover which is a better fit for them based on their interests, personalities. I have been watching football yesterday and today myself. By the way, swish,I am quite calm and relaxed. My team is still in it. Go Steelers!
