UofR Common App question

Wondering what the point is of the question to please "provide the title and approximate word count of the best piece of writing you completed during secondary school"? This seems rather odd. Anyone with an understanding that I am missing?

yea, i have a question about that too…
where do we submit it? is it just like an english essay i wrote and did really well on?

I don’t think we actually have to submit the piece of writing, do we? It just asks for the title…

on the website it says it is optional to submit one…

Fair question, WhataProcess. This is a place for IB Diploma candidates to share the title of their Extended Essay. Other students (non-IB) can give the title of a paper they wrote that they are proud of.

Writing samples are not required. This is an optional feature that can be utilized or ignored.

i am not an IB candidate, but can i still submit a paper i wrote for AP English comp?

Where do we submit it?

Writing samples in the past have been mailed, faxed, or emailed to our office. I would recommend emailing your specific admissions counselor to find out how they would like to receive it: https://enrollment.rochester.edu/RocWorld/?p=5880

If we don’t want to submit it, how do we get around it in the Common app, it says it requires an answer.

I’m also wondering that. Common App won’t mark the questions as “finished” unless that part is filled in…

i think you have to give the title of an essay you are proud of if not IB…but it is optional to send the whole essay in.

Does this have to be an academic piece of writing or can it be creative writing as well?

TSocash, I emailed the admissions counselor for my state. but got no reply.
should i just mail in my sample writing?

(btw how long are your essays guys?)

Guys, what is the purpose of this “best writing” question? There really isn’t any formal situation where I have “best writing” unless you count this English class essay of mine.
But what’s the point of this? Why is it in the other information column, not the supplement where interactive questions usually are?

Somebody please help!
