UofRochester vs Villanova vs George Washington U

ABOUT ME
Potential major: Economics (could change to MIS or anything w/ better appeal)
Career goal: Management Consulting, job right out of undergrad
Live in NYC, go to ethnic diverse boarding school for poor kids in central PA
African American male

HOW I PERCEIVE EACH COLLEGE
Rochester:
DIII spot on football team. but it's far and cold. superior academics, unsure of employer reputation

Villanova:
I'll try to walk-on DI-AA, get limited PT. seems to be all white school, good business reputation, big sports, good location

GWU:
no football, good rep. almost perfect city, tons of diversity, internship ops

Which one would you pick? (disregard cost)

I recommend GW

If you don’t mind explaining, why GW?

I don’t know much about African-American life at UR or how much that matters to you. I just don’t. You can check into that. You can, for example, look up the [Black Students Union](Campus Home - CCC), which is a student club, and the [African-American Network](http://www.rochester.edu/diversity/affinity/aan/index.html), which is a little harder to explain but may help you with jobs, internships, etc.

UR offers a lot of academic flexibility and lots of kids double major because that is made easier by the system. It has an excellent reputation. In that regard, I always say that if you really think about stuff like that what often matters is location; if you live in South Carolina then Clemson matters a heck of a lot more than Clemson matters in Ohio.

Villanova has a great business school, which would prepare you the best for your chosen field. I think that they also have good relations with NYC firms for job placement.

If you are currently attending a private school in PA, you are probably good at getting along with people from diverse backgrounds. You will need good people skills for consulting business opportunities.

If football is your big concern, try club football.
I assume that you were accepted into Villanova’s business school?

@Lergnom that makes sense, about the importance of location.

@marymac yes accepted to VSB. I never thought about “getting along with people from diverse backgrounds” for work but im glad to know it’ll be helpful

I could be reading this wrong, but sounds like you want to get in and get out and start making money as quickly and in as clear-cut a way as possible. Not sure why, but that is making me say Villanova. If you want to savor your education a little more, try a few more things academically, and push outside your comfort zone more then I think Rochester. Plus, you could play football. Although not considered a particularly “athletic” school my impression is that athletes are very happy there. Anyway, I think it is worth thinking about what choice will lead to you being the most dynamic you can be, even in terms of your professional goal, and also where you hit the sweetspot between where you will be comfortable while also being challenged.

And obviously all are great schools and any of the 3 should be able to get you where you want to go.

Did you watch the This is Rochester video on the website (from 2012)? Obviously there is some marketing aspect to it, but I think it’s a great video and might give you a sense of whether it speaks to you or doesn’t.

@finalchild exactly! I am granted scholarships from my school but only for undergrad (I wont even need most of it because these colleges are throwing fin aid at me) but honestly, my main motive for working hard is to get myself out of poverty and help my family. I enjoy learning but only things that I feel will actually benefit my personal well-being and future paycheck.

I’m just afraid that if I end up not playing football, I’ll be unhappy and feel unfulfilled, (been playing it since 7th grade, sucked at 1st, worked hard and named all-star this year) but I know Rochester isn’t perfect for me because of it’s distance and sporadic, gloomy weather

when you say: “I think it is worth thinking about what choice will lead to you being the most dynamic you can be, even in terms of your professional goal, and also where you hit the sweetspot between where you will be comfortable while also being challenged.”
Rochester definetly seems to fit that criteria

@finalchild Im not sure if Ive seen it but I’ll check it out

You didn’t apply to any Mid-Atlantic D3s? There are a ton in PA alone.

@finalchild nope. I didn’t feel like any of them appealed enough to me. Rochester was the only one. I really wanted to reach for the most competitive renown colleges. football is only a supplement, not the main consideration
Accepted:
GWU(n/a), Villanova(D1-AA), Drexel(n/a), UofRichmond(D1-AA), Rochester(D3)
Waitlisted:
Fordham (D1-AA, practically a rejection)
Pending:
Lehigh (D1-AA)

I purposely didn’t apply to any D1-A schools like PennState or UofVirginia because I figured I wont be playing on the teams there because of to my knowledge they play at a more competitive level that I’m unprepared for.

Is there any chance you can visit them to see which school appeals to you more?

As you may have noticed, dabeast, the style of parents on the UR board is not to sell but to offer help and ideas and information. You have to determine where you fit best. I think it’s less important to worry about which school gives you x in the future because, believe me, people who graduate from a vast number of schools manage to get jobs and live lives. What matters is you because it’s your life.

Yes, I visited Villanova. I really liked it for some reason. Visited Rochester, didn’t really like it or dislike it. But Rochester has great econ and a spot on football team. Visited Lehigh, didn’t really like the campus or the dominance of Greek life, it’ll be a full-ride if im accepted.
Just got accepted to UofRichmond and would go for free

Didn’t realize you visited URoch. If you were just neutral then that probably says something. If you are turned off by Lehigh then you might have similar reaction to Richmond although it is more “southern” and about half the size if I remember correctly. But “free” to a school as good as Lehigh or Richmond sounds pretty darn good especially if finances are a major concern.

Can you contact Villanova and U Richmond’s football teams to see how likely it would be to get a walk on position? Perhaps you could send them a film? Being named an All-Star sounds like it would be a plus, but I have no idea what the competition for those teams is.

@finalchild, I have yet to visit Richmond. financing isn’t a factor thus far. and when you say “If you were just neutral then that probably says something” what do you mean? is that a plus or a minus for Rochester?
