UofSC Honors College and Top Scholars Class of 2025

Nothing here either

I guess we will continue to keep checking email this week for that special email.

Good luck to to everyone !!!

Your D has a very impressive stats.

Hopefully , the TS decision will come out next week.

Last year the decisions came out on the 17th of January so it looks like tomorrow

We can hope, but since it did not come out yesterday, my guess is 1/22, the third working Friday of January.

That is an impressive resume! My daughter looks like quite the underdog for Top Scholars. Maybe she was just a December Honors College admit.

Previous Top Scholars notifications:

  • Friday 1/17/2020.
  • Wednesday 1/15/2019.
  • Thursday 1/18/2018

So, maybe next week but not necessary on the 17th or on Friday. Good luck to all.

Since Honors decisions have come out on 12/23 for both 2020 and 2019, I have a feeling it will either be today (1/17/21) like last year or as soon as the holiday is over.

I wonder if they will tell you if or if not on Top Scholar vs. just those that are in. My daughter got in the HC with a 3.95 UW, 4.55W, 32 ACT and submitted 5 APRs (4 5s and a 4). Strong ECs. Someone asked where else have they applied - well dad made her go overboard seeking $$ - but top choices are American, Charleston (she loved it and got into the HC with less $ than U of SC), Denver, and U of SC - she knows itā€™s not as strong a school but if the fit is right - should that matter? UGA, Pitt, Arizona. She will likely hear from UNC, MD, and Miami Florida in the next two weeks. William and Mary, Emory, and Rice are her stretch schoolsā€¦as well as UNC. Exciting times - except you have to make choices.

I asked on another thread - is going to an HC a reason to go vs. a school with higher pedigree and most said go to the higher ranked school. She might end up at a safety - Charleston - but if thatā€™s what sheā€™s really feeling, I will have to go along although I was surprised at their offer - not to the level of U of SC - $12 vs. $21K with similar tuition.

Top Scholar is an interview process for the higher scholarships offered. Pre-covid, it was a weekend event. Bets are it will be virtual this year.

Yes, you will be notified if she is invited to Top Scholar. Everyone is waiting on an email. The announcements will hopefully be soon. From what I understand, in the past there have been two Top Scholar groups: in-state and out-of-state, but I could be wrong.

Does CofC have any more opportunity for additional scholarships for her? I believe there is something similar to the top scholar weekend there, but not completely sure. CofC has somewhat of a reputation as a ā€œpartyā€ school here from an instate perspective. What is your daughterā€™s major? The money being offered to her is a significant differential. Best wishes to her as she continues this journey.

She loved the feel of CofC but based on ACT scores she knows itā€™s a notch below. She wants Jewish life. They have it at CofC. Not sure at U of SC. Sheā€™s invited to the Honors Weekend (virtual unfortunately) at Charleston and is super super excited. Hopefully there is more $. The initial was $12K. At some point we all run around rankings and other things - but when does fit come in? My better half says b4 anything else. I get that. I think if you want to party, youā€™ll party no matter where. And Iā€™m sure they party at C of C - but at U of SC too. Her major - she has no idea - but she put International Studies. I could see it changing. I hope - or she wonā€™t get a job

I suggest that rankings should be pretty far down the list of considerations. Iā€™d definitely put fit and finances above rankings. Iā€™ve certainly looked at rankings so I canā€™t say Iā€™m immune from them but fortunately my son couldnā€™t care less. Now, if youā€™re talking about post-graduate opportunities, then thatā€™s important but not equivalent to the ā€œrankā€ of a school. And the SC honors college provides tons of opportunities.

D21 was accepted to the Honors College back in December, OOS. 4.0 UWGPA, 4.7 WGPA. 8 APā€™s. Test optional. ECā€™s were decent, but no real hooks. Essays must have been pretty good since she got in.

Deferred EA at UGA, accepted to Tennessee. Waiting to hear from UNC, BC, Northeastern, Villanova, Clemson, Florida, FSU, Vandy.

If CofC is really her number 1, and you donā€™t get more merit money from them, you should call or write them and let them know that is an issue for you. Private schools have some flexibility, and can often ā€œfindā€ some extra scholarship money if that will seal the deal. Be up front and say you are deciding between CofC and UofSC, and your daughter really likes CofC better, but the UofSC money is just too good to pass up, could they reconsider her merit award? Worth a shot, but just make sure she really will commit to CofC if they do come up with the extra merit.

I think she has a great chance of getting additional money at the Honorā€™s virtual weekend at CofC. I wish I could help you with the Jewish life at CofC vs UofSC, but I canā€™t.

Still no updates? Whatā€™s everyone thinking for date of knowing?

Nothing here - For no real reason, Iā€™m thinking either tomorrow or the 29th. EA decisions were set to come out in mid December and they came out exactly on the 15th. Top Scholars are supposed to release the end of January, so it might be the 29th (last working day in January).

Iā€™m guessing Top Scholars weekend/interview will be virtual, so they probably donā€™t feel as pressured to get them out since there are no travel arrangements to make.

Againā€¦this is all guessing on my part. I have no more definite information than anyone else.

nope!

My guess is that notifications for Top Scholars will come out sometime next week. It sucks that only those who get it are sent a letter because then the only way of finding out that you didnā€™t get it is through others posts on this forum.
