Up-And-Coming Schools

I saw an article in the US News College Edition about up-and-coming schools so I decided to start a thread to ask this question:

Over the next 5-10 years, what relatively unknown or currently schools that are not very reputable do you think will make a big jump into the national spotlight?

State schools because of the economy.

Otherwise not really any. Many schools benefited from the huge high school classes in recent years, but as that shrinks, schools whose reputation increased from the excess students will fade.

…Alabama

George Mason

Alabama moved up the most spots in US News’ ranking. In recent years, Ohio State has become much more selective so I think we’ll see something there, too.

Anyone have any ideas on private schools?

U of Minnesota and Florida State both jumped 10 spots last time.

I believe that Elon University is coming up a bit…slowly but surely. At least that’s what I’ve heard :p.

UChicago…well it’s already phenomenally well-regarded amongst those who know what’s up, but I feel the gap in eminence of its academic programs and its selectivity/lay prestige is an arbitrage opportunity that will be exploited.

I’ve heard from some guidance counselors: UTampa (for B students) and Ursinus…and, yes, heard that Elon is “up and coming” as well…

Although it’s already well known and highly regarded, Grinnell is going to continue to climb…

Rising:
Elon
George Mason
Clemson
Pittsburgh
USC
Gonzaga

Drexel is also quickly climbing. With their increasing selectivity and construction around campus, it’ll be a great school soon enough.

I would say USC

Again, the economy is the primary factor. Private schools with large per student endowment that aren’t already premier institutions. Also, private schools that provide merit scholarships. On both counts U Richmond qualifies and it is on the rise already.

[List of colleges and universities in the United States by endowment - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](<a href=“List of colleges and universities in the United States by endowment - Wikipedia”>List of colleges and universities in the United States by endowment - Wikipedia)

In think USC and WashU have risen as far as they can at the undergrad level. USC will next make waves in its Ph.D. programs, most of which are crurrently lacking national prestige.

Undergrad? Whoever spends the most money on merit scholarships over a consistent period of time so that they’re known for their merit generosity … simple as that.

fordham uni

There are hundreds of “up and coming schools.” This is like a popularity contest which doesnt serve any real purpose except to fill up time.

Focus on schools that are good for you, where you can survive and thrive and leave it at that. Offer opinions of merit based upon fact and experience (cf. rumors and superficial observations) to help others with their selection.

Its decision time people. Good luck to all of you and may you be admitted, select and attend the best college for you, irrespective of what others may or may not do, or what is the most “prestigious” based on some superficial ranking system.

two schools in the northeast that have been gaining some notoriety… harrverd (sp?) and yaile. both have been working to get their name out there more. i think applications r up for both as well. thats a good sign of an up and coming school
