This is absolutely true, though I think the funding problems can be traced directly to McCallum who took over the office of governor and lost UW something on the order of 200 million overnight (100 million in public/100 million in private). This was in 2002 or 2003, if I recall.

Another point, Madison is losing professors but it isn’t to Minnesota, it’s to private universities like U of Chicago that can pay a lot more.

I’m hoping for Claremont McKenna, but I doubt it could ever hit top 5 simply because of it’s specialized focus.

Johns Hopkins (especially when they are done with all the major changes they are planning for the years ahead)
NYU (it’s going to keep rising as one of those “it” schools

University of Maryland College Park. They’re shooting up in US News rankings and they are trying (successfully) to attract more out of state students.

Kansas State University. Over the past few years, K-State has moved up from a third tier to a first tier national university ranking in USNWR. Several of its nine colleges are already nationally ranked (e.g., architecture, veterinary medicine and human ecology). Already a leading center for the study of animal health and disease, K-State was recently selected to be the home of the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility, a federal government research facility housing a $500 million complex of state of the art laboratories. K-State awards generous merit aid packages to non-resident students and it ranks first among all public universities in the number of Rhodes, Marshall, Truman, Goldwater and Udall scholarship winners over the past 25 years.

Colgate University
The name is growing, they’ve been making amazing renovations on the campus.
Although a pretty popular school for new yorkers, it is starting to become more well known in the midwest and west coast.

I also third that Temple is an up and coming school! The new buildings are very technologically advanced and the campus is very well-connected in technology and in the city of Philadelphia…The Business School and Art School are both very well-respected as well…

Georgia College & State University has had, perhaps, the most dramatic decade of any school in recent history, during which its average SATs have risen 250 points on the 1600 scale, its retention has gone from 55% to 87%, its acceptance rate has gone from around 90% down to around 50%, and it’s yield rate has jumped up there among the Ivies.

ay when I mentioned GA State, i was saying that it isn’t up and coming, so change it back to 1 (unless someone else did and i missed it >_>

I dont think schools like JHU, NYU and Colgate are schools that need to be mentioned here…

agreed… nyu, jhu, and colgate definitely should not be on this list.

Minnesota-Twin Cities is definitely an up and coming school, especially with their dedication to become an awesome research facility. They also have a number of great programs, but do not get the attention they deserve.

rsxwheeeeee I really think that Georgia State is an upcoming school. 14 years ago it was not even a GA research school and now it is. With the HOPE scholarship has help Georgia and move up in the ranking before HOPE only Georgia Tech and Emory were only two universities to go to. Gadad is right when he says GSCU is up and coming. See what HOPE is doing to Georgia public Universities, it is making them better.

PS University of Chicago and Washington University should not be on the list as they are excellent universities.
