Up-And-Coming Schools

Another vote for Tulane.

SUNY New Paltz was named “Hottest smal state school in America” by Newsweek. That, along with increased selectivity and a huge rise in the freshman class last year would put it in the up and coming category.

I don’t see how overpaying campus executives of gaining a very nice but narrow mostly graduate and post graduate research institute will do much for either school at the general student level. I think OSU could be on very thin ice in hardpressed Ohio.

“Georgia College & State University has had, perhaps, the most dramatic decade of any school in recent history, during which its average SATs have risen 250 points on the 1600 scale, its retention has gone from 55% to 87%, its acceptance rate has gone from around 90% down to around 50%, and it’s yield rate has jumped up there among the Ivies.”

Yay! I’m so glad to see GCSU get some love. It’s Georgia’s only public liberal arts college, it has a beautiful campus, has hired some truly exciting faculty, and has a fantastic honors program.

Agnes Scott has seemed poised for a breakout for several years. It’s been consistently ranked around number 50 in the national LAC rankings, it has a rock solid endowment, gives out lots of FA, great faculty, an amazingly lovely campus minutes from downtown Atlanta, and is very pro-study abroad.

In the case of OSU under new leadership, please listen to keynote speaker - Gee’s speech at the recent ACE’s annual meeting which received Standing-O attended by provosts, presidents, top educators across the nation.

In the case of MSU-NSCL, please research the impacts of LBNL (Berkeley), SLAC (Stanford) has over the years to its Undergrad community.

I was honored & Privileged (& acknowledged) to have participated in campaigning for RIA-FRIB Project over the years for MSU. The impacts/benefits on its undergrad study body would be tremendous (not only in education & certainly not limited to physics might I add) once the facility is completed by 2017. I would have to write a paper if I have to break down the advantages one by one on CC. Then again, you can call me homie, since I am a proud alumnus to both institutions! :)

What about American University?

I don’t have the stats to back it up, but I believe that it’s been getting a lot more competitive to get in. I also think I read something positive within the last few weeks about their financial situation.

Two worthy additions:

+1 for the University of Minnesota - TC

Add the University of Alberta. The Albertan government got rich on oil and has invested heavily in higher education.

I suspect Northeastern will be ascending in the ranks.
