We are excited to announce some big changes coming in 2020 that we believe will provide you with greater access to information and resources to help you achieve your educational goals. To support these future enhancements, on Monday, Dec. 9, we will push an update to the way we log in on College Confidential. Instead of the username, we will now need to enter the email address associated with the account (of course, email address and the current password). Rest assured, email addresses will not be visible online. This information will not be accessible to third parties and will remain private, as it has in the past.
For those who do not remember the email address with which they registered, please go to your user profile page (to get there you can click on your username in the header) and see the info there (this info is only visible to you).
UPDATE AFTER RELEASE:
I was informed by the team that most of the issues are resolved by now so hopefully you can log in successfully.
Some comments:
Some users will need to reset the password in order to log in; if you don’t have access to the email that’s tied to your CC account, please reach out;
If you made it in without changing your password, you’re good to go; there’s no need to change it.
If you cannot log in just on mobile or a specific browser, you need to clear your cache and remove CC cookies.
Here are the steps one needs to do to clear cache and remove cookies on mobile:
1- go to your phone settings
2- get to the list of all apps installed on your phone
3- pick your browser
4- you should see an option to manage the storage for that app click on it
5- now you should see a couple of options: if you click on ‘Free up Space’ you will delete all cookies and other cached items on your phone from that app; if you click on ‘Manage’ to clear cache and cookies only for College Confidential
To clear cache and remove cookies on your browser do:
Click on History -> Show full history
Click on Clear browsing data
Select "Cookies and other site data" & "Cached images & files" and hit "Clear data"
Please send me an email to sorini@collegeconfidential,com if you still encounter difficulties. We are aware this was a difficult transition so we THANK YOU for your understanding.
What if you have 2 accounts on the same email address?
I had an account a few years ago when searching for high schools for my kids. Set up a new account for the college search, to preserve privacy. (Old account would have revealed the high school.) How will it know which account I want to use?
Since I registered probably 14 years ago I don’t remember the email address I used. Or, for that matter, my password. How many chances do I get to guess?
@Wellspring - click on your name and it will take your to your homepage. And there you will find your email address! As for the password, can’t help with that one, but it doesn’t sound like you need it.
Well, if they have 2 (probably set up before the latest conversion) it apparently IS possible! Maybe only one will be accessible when the new log-in procedure goes into effect.
With all the IP workarounds there have been plenty of opportunities for multiple cc accounts. In past iterations there were better tools to catch multiple accounts. Maybe the opportunity to have multiple accounts (without getting caught) has changed…
I had a post deleted and I’m not sure why. Is it against the TOS to question why things are being done and what the priorities are? My basic questions were:
How is changing the longin going to help people “achieve your educational goals” as stated in post #1 above?
Why is this login change prioritized over changes long time poster have been asking for such as reinstating page numbers, moving “latest posts” to top of highlighted post list?
Also curious if anyone was planning to announce this on a more looked-out page before Monday.
Whoever said they can’t remember password and the response that it doesn’t sound like password will be needed, I’m sure it will be required; otherwise anyone could sign into your account if they know your email. I’m sure there will be a forgot pw link. (I suspect the email sign-in is related to bogus email sign-ups and such; not sure, just taking a wild guess. )
Can I change my email and password now, before the change? I seldom use the email address I signed up with in 2006 (!), and want my account to run off my current email.
Tried to login on a computer (Firefox 70) after the auth token on the computer expired. Did not work with the email address and same password. The password reset gave an error. This post is from a mobile device with an unexpired auth token.
