Upcoming Visit

Hey Stevens students - D and I are coming for a visit next week from California. Any "don't miss" items for our visit? Where's a good place for breakfast in Hoboken? Any suggestions for a successful visit welcome - thanks!!

I would go to Stacks Pancake House at 506 Washington St. for breakfast but get there
early as there is usually a line later in the morning.

For lunch, you must sample one of the famous Hoboken Italian Delis. My pick is Vito’s which is a few blocks from campus at 806 Washington. They make their own delicious mozzarella. Get a few spectacular sandwiches to go and picnic on campus on one of the benches at Castle Point (where the cannon is located) looking out at the iconic New York City skyline. There are picnic tables nearby as well.

After lunch take a ferry ride across the Hudson to World Financial Center terminal to Battery Park City. There are beautiful parks and magnificent gardens to see in addition to a closer look at The Freedom Tower. If you are still hungry, you can grab a bite at a few of the famous food trucks which are parked outside of the NY Mercantile Exchange adjacent to the ferry terminal. Also, the much beloved Shake Shack is in the vicinity as well.

If you continue to walk along the Hudson River Esplanade north and cross the West Side Highway at Stuyvesant High School, you can walk over to Tribeca and do a little exploring. Great neighborhood.

I love Hoboken and NYC and have spent a lot of time in both places over the last 30 years. These are also the favorites of my son, an extremely happy Steven’s student in his second year. Loves the school, loves the neighborhood and misses the view when he is not there.

Have a wonderful trip!!!

Thanks Kitty40! Such great suggestions. D is really excited to see the campus & we will fit in as many of your suggestions as we can. (Must try the deli - yum!!) Younger D is a huge Cake Boss fan, so we need to make our way to Carlo’s Bakery as well - LOL.

Here is a fun tid-bit about Carlo’s. With a Steven’s student ID, you get to skip the line which often wraps around the block due to the popularity of Cake Boss. With this ID, you are waved right in and served immediately. When visiting our son, we have taken advantage of this perk a few times when having a cannoli craving.

WOW - I showed that post to D1 and D2, and Stevens has just gone up several notches on the college list!!!

Kitty that is interesting about Carlos because I think my son and his friends tried the ID thing and it didn’t work. I’ll have to tell them to try again!

Gertrude-Kitty gave you a lot of great ideas. If, however, you are unable to plan a meal time, just walk down Washington St. and see what looks interesting.

We have done this several times with my son (just finished freshmen year) and it is has been successful so far. There are lots of small places along the street, Italian, Thai, Chinese, Indian, Portuguese, that you might like trying. My favorite for a quiet dinner is Court St. at the corner of 6th and Court St. We have also done Amanda’s for brunch and that is good, too.

Thanks - we are about to embark on a tour of 4 colleges, and Stevens is the one my D is most excited about. Sounds like your kids are having a good experience there!

Let us know how your visit goes; I would be interested to hear what you think.

Will do - we will be there on Friday. We’ve been in touch with Justin and Sheena in the admissions office who have been wonderfully helpful.

You lucked out, the weather was beautiful today!

Our visit to Stevens was very interesting. i was just blown away by the campus and the views. The city of Hoboken is awesome. Unfortunately, we discovered that the school was not going to be a fit for D. However, it is an amazing place & we will be recommending it to some friends whose D is interested in engineering. I can tell you that i wanted to sign myself up to attend even if D’s not interested!!

^^I was blown away by the views too. To think that Stevens students get to wake up every morning to see that Manhattan skyline that folks in will and do pay millions for. The Engineering info session was extremely informative…but the size and lack of sports did it in for us. But great school.

Glad you both enjoyed your visits and good luck with your other schools!
