My son will be attending the Engineering Campus Day on Monday. We are flying in on Sunday afternoon, so we will have some time on Sunday to look around. Does anyone have any suggestions on things we might want to visit on Sunday that will not be included in the general tour on Monday. I tried to purchases passes to one of the student rec centers so we could work out and maybe play some basketball, but was told they are only available to students or faculty. (Alabama have us free passes to their rec center when we visited last summer).
Would also be open to suggestions on restaurants near campus. Nothing fancy, just a place to get a good burger or maybe some pizza.
Go to Zingerman’s. Best deli west of NYC. The sandwiches are expensive, but worth it. Also, it is going to be extremely cold in Michigan this weekend! Much colder than normal, so don’t let it scare your son. But all of you should dress WARM!
For pizza, presumably you don’t have Jet’s in Minnesota, so you should try it. Most of the best places for food in Ann Arbor are closed on Sunday. Another popular place that’s very close to campus (both central and north) that’s very popular is No Thai.
They wear shorts in Minnesota in the middle of winter! The only thing worse about winter in Michigan is the abundance of grey, cloudy days. The western part of the midwest seems to have many more sunny days this time of year.
You would be better off working out in your hotel if they have on. Our rec centers (especially the CCRB) are all very dumpy. They are quite embarrassing actually.
It was 15 below zero when we got up this morning. Fortunately, it warmed up to zero by the start of the walking tour of the campus. Really liked the school, but my son was checking the temp in Houston (Rice).
^^^^^That’s something that Michigan will never be able to compete with. Students who want warm weather locations are not going to come here from OOS. However, -15F temps are very unusual for Ann Arbor and should not be expected to occur with any type of regularity,
They said it was the coldest day they have had in a 100 years (no idea I’d that is true or not). Just our luck. We had the other extreme last summer during visit to another school it was 103F. They kept trying to assure us it normally not that warm.
I doubt the cold weather will be a deciding factor for him. Really loved the Engineering school. Decision will most likely come down to $ and we are still have not heard anything from Michigan on merit scholarships. We are heading to the Singer/Stamps scholarship weekend at University of Miami in a few weeks. They are further down the list of schools, but if they offer full tuition it may move up, although they are not in the same league as Michigan engineering.
On the positive side, we were there for almost the worst possible weather (tornado would be worse) and the campus life didn’t seem to miss a beat. The biggest downside is we probably would have spent time exploring on our own if it had been a little warmer.
My son, a freshman, is from Arizona. (It has been in the 80s here this week.) He said last night that he hasn’t really minded the weather, even though he had considered going to USC so is reminded of their weather. He said he had a blast this past week-end because no one wanted to go out so there was a lot going on in the dorm. It’s what you make of it. I do agree, however, that it is too bad you didn’t get to explore more on your visit.
My daughter I went to campus day last year in April and when we arrived it was 70 degrees. When we left two days later there was two inches on snow on the ground. Be prepared for anything.
