"As the application season is coming to a conclusion, we want to give you an update on the Davidson process.
If you have enrolled at another college or university Early Decision or have made a commitment elsewhere; please notify us so your application can be withdrawn. "
My DD received that email yesterday as well. We, too, initially thought it was a hint of acceptance from the subject line because she was one of over a thousand nominees for the Belk Scholarship. We had read that Davidson does not want its Belk Scholar nominees to become disinterested in Davidson if they were not selected to continue in the process, which is what DD learned two weeks ago.
Still, it’s a bit strange if you ask me. DD has not received any similar communication about withdrawing her application from the other schools she applied to.
@rednecktiger, my D is a Belk finalist. Filing our FAFSA (and other financial aid) forms had no impact on the selection process. If your son is interested in Davidson, I’d encourage him to keep his application submitted. Belk rejection does not mean he wouldn’t be happy and successful there, nor does it mean the admissions committee doesn’t welcome his application. Admissions are need-blind, and he would graduate debt-free. Since you’ve already paid your application fee, why not find out if it’s an option? He can always decline if he finds a better match.
@rednecktiger, I can see where that could be an issue. There are schools with nice merit scholarships we have ignored, because we know our daughter’s financial aid award will be bigger than the scholarships with two kids in college at the same time. If I was a school, I would save them for high-end wealthy kids and make sure I had good aid for the high-end lower-to-middle-class kids.
No, the e-mail is trying to cull the herd of applicants who have no intention of attending Davidson. Many, many applicants applied just for a chance to win the Belk scholarship. By now, most have been rejected for the Belk, and some of those now have no interest in Davidson. For a small school, yield is very important, so Davidson doesn’t want to waste any acceptances on someone who has lost interest or already committed to another college. You may very well receive an offer, but I wouldn’t say that this e-mail indicates either thumbs up or down. Good luck!
