Thanks for the input! But do you mean that as in I’m just another generic applicant? Because I thought that some of my major accomplishment, such as establishing a non profit, creating an educational organization, and getting published despite my impoverished background are quite unique. Would you not agree?

Emory - in
Harvard - reach
Columbia - reach

Can you give me tips on how to succeed in the intel science faire please.

@glido, I know that Harvard and Columbia are reaches for all but would I at least be considered competitive for those schools? And also, what would my chances be at Georgetown and Johns Hopkins?

@turtwig59, you have to first develop something that is unique and creative, something that will wow the judges. The key is not to do it for the award, but to do it for fun. Find a science comeptition near you, and compete for fun. But you have to do something very creative. When starting your project, do something that could potentially change the world. Make a good impression on your judges while presenting something that will blow their minds, and you’ll make it. Just remember again, do it for fun, not for the prize.

Harvard’s a gamble for anyone but they’ll like that you’re president/captain of various organizations and not just a “joiner.” Your personal initiative with the app and founding the non-profit organization will look great, as well. I want to say you have a good chance but, it’s Harvard, so hard to say. Good luck :)

Emory–low match/match
Harvard SCEA–reach (because it’s often unpredictable)
Columbia–low reach

What other schools are you looking at? Have you considered safety schools that interest you?

Chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1529081-chance-uri-unh-uconn-nyu-bu-cornell-brown-upenn.html

Thank you for your response! I’m thinking about Georgetown and Johns Hopkins as well, and have yet to decide a safety.

Great stats to get through the door, ECs are strong and your Intel achievement is outstanding Harvard material. Issues I see: ECs may be too much of a laundry list, I would only list those that you were heavily involved it as to avoid coming off as being spread too thin, which is a big red flag at Ivies. Harvard is a reach, but is possible if you write passionate essays which reflect how YOU will contribute to Harvard’s campus. From your resume, I would guess it’s that you will do major science research in order to reach your goal of helping cancer patients. Make your science/cancer/community service passions clear. Would you guys mind helping me out on this thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-pennsylvania/1530114-should-i-apply-wharton-cas-ed.html#post16183198 ? Thanks

Thanks for your reply!

oh my god… amazing academics (nice intel!), founder of 2 nonprofits, research… i think you’re about as good as it gets. i think you’ve got a solid chance for scea (still a reach but better than others). good luck!

chance me? we’ve got (strangely) very similar profiles haha http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1530717-chances-harvard-scea-will-chance-back.html#post16188272. thanks!

Yeah man, I think you have a shot at getting into Harvard, but there’s a lot of competition, especially for Asians out there .

Emory no doubt. Columbia and Harvard are low reach I think with those ECs. Good luck! Please chance back. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/multiple-degree-programs/1528664-questions-about-plme-hpme-chances.html

Honestly, your extracurricular activities are amazing, but vastly unfocused. There are so many things going on in your life it seems, but nothing stands out as a passion! I applaud your immense achievements thus far, however, don’t get your hopes up kiddo. I’m rooting for you but there is so little room at the Ivies, that I worry the adcom will consider your application flimsy in the long run. Best of luck, truly.

^Thanks for your reply! On the app, I’m going to highlight my philanthropic work as well as my passion to fight breast cancer. Those are my two main areas of focus.

Here are my activities that I will include for my philantrophic work:

-Founder of a non profit organization (501(c)(3)) that fights the poverty issue in my state (Fairly successful); I will write about how my personal poverty issue motivated me
to start a non profit to fight poverty
-Founder and leader of an organization with a goal to fight the education issue that goes around failing schools in my state and uses teaching materials from a website to educate the kids better (it is in supplement to what the teacher teaches).
-Volunteer at a non profit that improves global health
Created an app in the App Store that raises awareness about many global issues
-Tutoring poor, little kids at a church
-Amnesty International President
-Reading to toddlers at a library (~150 hrs)

For Breast Cancer:

-Did a science project on breast cancer (got Intel with it)
-Author in a publication
-Internship at breast cancer research lab 3 summers
-Founder and president of Breast Cancer club
-Summer camp on medicine
-Annual Breast Cancer Race volunteer
-Breast Cancer Non profit organization
-At times Quiz Bowl as science questions are sometimes asked

In regard to my other activities:

I was forced to get a job at Kumon because of my family’s income.
I also have just a few activities related to soccer, because that is a hobby.

I don’t see many other activities that are unrelated to my passions and hobby, except maybe Model UN?

Also, can anyone assess my chances for Cornell and UPenn?
