Pomona is one of the best private liberal arts colleges in the country, ranked at #4 for LACs by USNAWR, and was the first of the five claremont colleges. Don’t worry, the confusion is a common one. I’m not applying to any CSU schools, because I’m in the top 9% of my class across california I am guaranteed admission to a UC, which is effectively my safety. Here’s a link to learn more about pomona: [Pomona College Admissions: SAT Scores, Financial Aid & More](Pomona College: Acceptance Rate, SAT/ACT Scores)

UCSB: safety
UMich: match

dam looking gooood

Lolz if you think going to a good college automatically guarantees you will get a good job, you’re in for a bad time. There are plenty of people who went to lower ranked colleges and majored in things like art and history who become Ibankers or hedge fund traders.

Not to be a donkey (if you get that reference), but I don’t think OP is a “shoe-in” for those schools. The people applying to those schools, especially Caltech and MIT have won Siemens, INTEL, ISEF, etc. These awards highly prestigious, attracting the brightest minds from all over the nation (sometimes world). Now, as a current UChicago student, I will say that OP’s profile is as good as many UChicago students (myself included), but most of the colleges on her list will care very much about essays and will use it to discriminate between applicants. I don’t think it’s fair to delude OP into believing she is definitely going to get into the schools on her list. I think she will get into many of them if she crafts excellent essays (feel free to PM if you have any concerns about my views or need help on essays). To put her scores in perspective (while they are phenomenal), they are near the 75th percentile of some of the schools. Many of the students who have gotten in had some hook, and many had 3-5 subject scores in the 780-800 range. Liberal arts colleges, especially Bowdoin, care much less about standardized test scores than do research universities, and instead choose to focus on hooks, ECs, essays, and recs.

To put the SAT I in perspective, here are at choice institutions’ 75th percentile score (these are all from the 2012-2013 school year, except for Upenn and MIT, which are from 2011-2012 school year)
Caltech: 2380
Stanford: 2350
Pomona: 2310
MIT: 2340
Brown: 2310
Bowdoin: 2280 (cares very little, scores not even required)
Penn: 2300
H Mudd: 2330

Stanford (applying under Restrictive Early Action): reach (probs get in if everything goes well)
Pomona: reach
Brown: reach
Bowdoin: Low reach (if essays are done right)
Penn: reach
Caltech: High reach (they like very theoretical “nerdy”, high stats kids)
MIT: reach
Harvey Mudd: reach
UCSD: Safety
UCLA: Match
UCSC: Safety
UCSB: Safety
UMich: Match

OP, I know it may seem like I am bashing you, but many of these schools look for “character” if you will and seem to have a very random admissions process. MIT and Caltech are notorious for rejecting 2400s. No one should believe H Mudd is a “match” and same with Brown. MIT and Caltech very sporadic in acceptances as well, but Penn has a very standardized process. To sum it up, academic: Good, ECs: Adequate, Awards: Rudimentary. Please PM me if you need anything at all or if you would like to know why I’m chancing so harshly.

As a sidebar comment: I would not recommend anyone of your caliber to go to the Cali system. PM if you would like to know why. Also, your choice of schools seems very sporadic and random, can I ask why you are applying to those certain schools? You should try to cut the list down (unless you have already written essays, have recs ready, and can afford all the apps). I also have acquired a rudimentary knowledge of how adcoms decide on a student (ranking system), so I’m fairly certain my rankings are accurate. I’m sure you will get into at least 2 of the reach schools, so good luck.

Also, if you are serious about a PhD, I implore you to attend a lib. arts college, or a pseudo lib arts college (Brown, Dartmouth, Uchicago, etc.). OP if you can get recruited for rowing (might be too late, not sure), you are guaranteed a spot in every college on your list.

Hey kiddo, can I ask you why you don’t recommend the UC system? And why liberal arts type schools are best for future phd students? I’m not disagreeing but as another student in the midst of applications, I am curious.

Stanford- reach (honestly if they don’t take you, I don’t know who they would take)
Pomona- slightly lower reach than Stanford
Brown- low reach
Borodin- low reach
Penn- reach
CalTech- reach
MIT- reach
Harvey Mudd- low reach
UCLA- match
U of M- match
UCSD- safety
