Updated Chances--MIT, CalTech, others

Here's my stats

Classification
Upper Class White Male Conservative/Anti-Communist; the class people
seem to dislike

State
Florida

High School
Public, in top academic county in Florida. IB Program carries the school as far as competitiveness. Sends a couple students to top schools each year. Last year people got into Yale, Harvard, Cornell, Duke, Vandy, 2 in Columbia, etc, etc

GPA
UW: 4.00
W: 5.7 something (IB/AP = 7, Pre-IB/Honors = 6) idk on the regular
scale

Rank
Top 5 for sure. Should rise to Valedictorian next year, some people try to raise their ranks through certain unfortunate technicalities, but their tactics only go so far and I know a few received B's this year

SAT's
SATI: 750 M, 620 CR, 700 Writing (1370/2070)
I want to get this CR up, my vocab sucks although I can write
amazingly (I was surprised I got 700 even though my essay was
rather sarcastic). Maybe I'll take the ACT...
SATII's: 800 Math IIC, 800 Physics, 800 Chemistry

Courseload
IB Program--as rigorous as possible

Freshman
AP Human Geography
Pre-IB English I

where I got 101)

Extracurriculars

True Passionate Ones:
(a) 2 Year Varsity Swimming--3 including senior year(I was an idiot and
didn't swim freshman year). Expecting to make Captain next year
Club Swimming Over the Summer
Swam Competitively since I was 5
Total High School Hours: 300+ Easily
(b) FIRST Robotics--Lead Programmer
Total Hours: 200+

Other less significant:
(a) Doing my own research on the efficiency of Solar Panels for my
Extended Essay in Physics
(b) NHS
(c) Tutoring for service--50+ Hours
(d) Joined Beta Club at the end of Junior Year. Will compete in science
(e) Teenage Republicans and Young Democrats

Awards
(a) Numerous school awards for my academic prowess (not very
prestigious)
(b) FIRST Robotics 2006 FL Regional Winners (1st Place State Level)
(c) In the pool for National Merit Semi-Finalists--will have to see what
happens next year
(d) Swimming--Team is 2nd Place for 2 years in Districts
Placed 2nd in 100 Yd Breastroke in District Championship,
if that counts for anything

Not too much here

Essays/Reccomendations: Both should be superb, my teachers are fairly close to me and love me and are well educated (PhDs, so they can convey what they want to say with ease). My writing is excellent, most likely from the plethora of literature I read.

Random Tidbits
Father built his own airplane, so aviation is a major part of my life and
has become a passion (that runs throughout the family)

My passions are engineering, swimming, and paintball (when I get time to
play, my schedule is usually non-stop with other extracurriculars). Also

mocking political candidates for their absurd ideas that sound good but
are truly detrimental is a hobby of mine.

I have 100 Copies of a children's book published (I guess nothing

spectacular, it was a while ago)

In middle school I competed in the Junior Solar Sprint in Maine (got various
high rankings at the state level--1st for craftsmanship, 2nd for
speed,etc.). Perhaps not noteworthy for a resume but good to show
passion in an essay.

So thanks for looking at my stats. My major will be Aerospace Engineering, and these are the various schools I'm applying to:

MIT (EA)
CalTech
GATech
University of Maryland-College Park
University of Florida (Legacy from Brother, In-State)
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Cornell University

Also if anyone could suggest any other schools I might want to look at for Aerospace, that would be nice. And would applying EA to, say, CalTech in addition to MIT hurt my chances at MIT?

OK, MIT loves first robotics, so taking a leadership role in that will definitely help you out. However, your scores are on the low end for MIT. Get your CR up this summer you'll have a really good shot. Everything else is solid imho.

Oh and I don't see how applying to Caltech EA could influence your admission at MIT.

I just am a little skeptical about applying to multiple colleges early action. It is supposed to show that someone is intent on going to that one college, so applying to two early action in my eyes might be rather contradictory.

Neither Caltech nor MIT will know if you apply to the other school EA, and they wouldn't care if they knew -- the applicant pools for the two schools overlap quite a bit.

Applying early to both Caltech and MIT won't hurt your chances at either school.

You might also consider applying to the University of Michigan -- they have an excellent aerospace program.

Okay, thx

Bump

My S applied to three schools EA last year. We had ruled out ED schools because we wanted to see FA packages. It was one of the best moves he made!

He applied to MIT, Caltech and UChicago EA, and having two accpetances in December made the rest of the year a lot less stressful. It also enabled him to drop three other apps, since his two EA acceptances (MIT and UChicago) were among his top four choices. In retrospect, he probably should have withdrawn from Caltech after being deferred to RD, since he was certain at that point he wouldn't attend even if accepted.

Case also has a mechanical/aerospace engineering department and is good about merit aid.

Thanks abunch.

Scholarships will help because my parents would be burdened greatly to put me through these schools that cost over $40k per year and I can't go into too much debt so I can progress to graduate studies (PhD). My dad is a workaholic (he not only is a pathologist, but also does legal work and other house projects when he's not working at the hospital) and tends to be generous in donating money, so I'd feel bad if he paid for a 160k-200k education.

Anyone give more input on chances please?

bump bump bump it up

hate to bump it again, but id like some more chaances
