I realize that this topic has already been done to death, but the answers I've read seem rather ridiculous, so...

In order to meet deadlines, I submitted College Board's CSS PROFILE using estimates from my parents' 2009 tax papers. Now that their 2010 tax papers are finished, how do I go about making sure that the schools to which it has been submitted get my updated information? I know I can't make corrections online. Does that mean I really have to call every single school for their individual financial aid policies (that's nine schools!)? Or can I just assume that I have to print out the CSS PROFILE, make corrections by hand, and send copies to each school (effectively killing a forest in the process)?

Go to the website of each school and see what their directions are for Profile corrections.

If you can’t find the information there, call the FA office of the school and ask for their policy for Profile updates.

Just speaking for myself here, but I never make the assumption that all schools have the same FA policies.

“Or can I just assume that I have to print out the CSS PROFILE, make corrections by hand, and send copies to each school (effectively killing a forest in the process)?”

Well, I have always done that for all 4 kids when they were applicants!
So yes! Sent the CSS PROFILE Corrected Copy with the tax returns, medical expenses and other pertinent info! You will kill less forests when you are a returning student. :)

Unfortunately, I don’t think any of the schools to which I’m applying have posted any information regarding CSS PROFILE updates on their websites. (You’d think they would have, considering how early they make us file for financial aid!) I think I’ll just call each school to make 100% sure of what they need me to do. :)

I was thinking of creating a table containing the PROFILE code, old value, new value and a reason for correction and send it to them along with the tax returns, etc. Is that an overkill? I’ve about 15 items to correct.

is info put on css sent to some kind of common data base that css colleges then pull out? that is, the data sits in one place and many different colleges pull from it (as it is done w/ fafsa, as I understand it)?

or are the css data sent TO the colleges? that is, the css data that each college sees is whatever the data was that was submitted on a given data; sort of like the css applicant is sending the buckets TO each of the schools.

I ask this because of a correction scenario I find myself in now. I want to add a college today (2/7) using my 2/1 css that I have already created, but I wanted to make a change to one of the financial buckets for this 2/7 college, something I found after I had already submitted the info to the 2/1 colleges. will the other colleges i sent the css to on 2/1 also get this change ?

I simply made that change and added the one college that had the due date of 2/7, today. In the payment part of the css, it said for me to pay $16 for the one school. HOWEVER, in the ‘acr charge summary’ from CSS, at the end , in the ‘College and Program Information’ section, it lists the previous 2/1 schools.

questions:

1) will those schools see the change that I made today on 2/7?

2) will any of those schools see this list? ie, can one CSS school see what other schools are receiving the CSS profile?

3) if the answer is no to these questions, then why are these colleges listed here? I would expect to see the 5 schools listed on the 2/1 ACR charge report, the schools that I paid to have a css sent, and one and only one school on the 2/7 ACR charge report (if the answer is no to the above questions), the one school I paid for on this date.

It even lists the ED school, too - which is dead and gone.

it is confusing.

I’ll call 'em manana and see what is going on.

I only need to make changes to 6 line items on the Profile, all regarding parent income, tax credits, etc. The items are clustered together on 2 of the 14 pages, do I really need to print out and mail ALL 14 pages to each school?

Okay, so I got emails back from most of those colleges today, and, unfortunately, it seems like you’d really have to contact each and every school for their individual policies concerning updated financial aid forms. Generally, either they didn’t care about updates (since they’d compare your 2010 tax information to the forms you sent anyway), or they wanted emailed/faxed/mailed corrections. It really depends on the school; call or email them to make sure of what you need to do.

Thanks Sayuri09. As I have been collecting papers to submit for IDOC (only 1 out of the 7 schools uses IDOC!) it occurs to me that all the info I would be updating is right there on our tax forms!

For some reason, some of the schools I’ve emailed have told me to update the FAFSA and the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE anyway. It seems silly, but I’d ask to make sure. :)
