Updated Engineer Chances Please!

Hello, it's the summer and I'm already starting to write application essays and getting a bit nervous. Wanna help calm my nerves and give me a chance? Thanks in advance!

Cali/Male/Asian

1st generation to go to college in USA
born outside USA
One of the most competitive schools in Cali (1H, 1Y, 1P, 2S this year, 6-7 to each UC, 1UPenn, 1JHU, 1Cornell)
Top 10%

GPA: 3.96 UC, ~3.61 UW & ~4.045 W (10th-11th)
SAT: 2100 (640CR, 720W, 740M), 2100 (600CR, 720W, 780M) ,retaking for 2250+

SAT II: MathIIc 800, Phys 750
APs: Calc BC (5), Calc AB Subscore (5), Eng Lang. (3), Phys Mech (3), Phys E&M (3), World History (3)

Frosh: HGeometry, HGlobal Studies, Bio
Summer: H Alg 2. @ CC
Sopho: AP World, H Eng, H Pre Calc, Chem, Phys
Summer: H US History @ CC
Junior: AP Calc BC, AP Phys C, AP Eng Lang
Senior: AP Bio, AP Stat, AP CS, AP Gov&MacroEcon, AP Eng Lit

ECs: Piano - 7yrs, Marching Band - 4yrs (Instrument for 6yrs), Bio-related Research Internship - current summer, Siemens/Intel - (pending), Local Science Fair - (pending), Math Club - 4yrs, Riddle Club - 2yrs (President)

Looking at:
UCB
UCLA
UCSD
UCD
USC
Carnegie Mellon
Cornell
UIUC
JHU
Duke
UNC Chapel Hill
UM Ann Arbor

I'm hoping that UCD will be a safety; should I apply to Cal Poly SLO or another UC just in case? Any recommendations on which school to apply to?

And what school should I apply ED to?

Wanting to apply Bio Engineering

Thanks!

Your GPA and test scores are ok though they are not shining (UCs are very academically oriented so raising your test score is a good idea) Your ECs are solid especially with the internship. And if you manage to get some awards with Siemens/Intel/the local science fair, that would boost your application a lot. Though I'm wondering at why you haven't been in any science related clubs or taken the SAT II bio test if you want to major in bio engineering. That might look a bit strange to colleges. I think UCD is probably ok as a safety if you can raise those scores a bit. But it should be fine either way. Also, UNC Chapel Hill and UM Ann Arbor may be a bit harder than expected since you're OOS. I know that UCB/UCSD/Duke/JHU have pretty good bio engineering programs. You may also consider MIT since it has an extremely good bio program as well as is a top engineering school. It may be a reach but it never hurts to try right? :) Good luck! Just make sure to work on those essays and get good recs.

Chance me back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=368144

Thanks, I didn't want to apply to MIT or CalTech cause I really don't think I have a chance at all. >_>

Oh and about the Bio SATII - Since last year, I've always had a stronger interest in Physics than Bio and thus took AP Phys early; I suddenly changed my mind this year, weird eh? But yes, I forgot to mention - I will be taking the Bio SAT2 along with my Phys retake.

And our school doesn't have any science related clubs for some reason; someone initiated one last year, which I attended, but it barely lasted the whole school year so I don't think it's a good idea to put that on my app. Not enough interest I guess

Heading over to your thread right now. Other opinions would be great!

Thanks

also-first generation means your parents didn't go to college period-not just that they didn't go in the US. If you think about it, basically all asians in this country are first generation going to college in the US. of course, if you are a true first generation college student-your chances go up significantly. and also, your ap physics scores could hurt you for engineering. anything UCB and above is prbly a slight reach, but the ucs below that and michigan are pretty doable. do ed to either duke or jhu-top two bioengineering prgrms.

"reject at all"

-firefox

Low GPA.

UCB: REJECT
UCLA: Maybe
UCSD: Maybe
UCD: In
USC: REJECT
Carnegie Mellon: In
Cornell: REJECT
UIUC: Maybe
JHU: REJECT
Duke: REJECT
UNC Chapel Hill: Maybe
UM Ann Arbor: Maybe

USC is much more of a maybe than a reject. get real gaffe

Your GPA and SAT Scores are a little on the low side for application to the top colleges, but you have pretty solid ECs and a decent number of AP classes, although your 3s might work against you during the application process. I'd say you definitely have a chance at UCLA, UCSD, maybe UCB and UM Ann Arborif you manage to boost your SAT score and win at Siemens (or something else to boost your app). As for the really selective schools like Duke, you probably won't get in, but you'll never know unless you try.

Hmm I heard that AP scores could only help and not hurt. Does this only apply to UCs or something?

Looking to get a general consensus so the more chances the better :)

Thanks everyone!

computers don't read your app-unless you don't self report (which will look even worse)-they see it. human beings aren't programmed to ignore information even if it isn't the "official policy"

Isn't it possible to only send some AP scores though - ie. only my calc bc & ab?

More chances would be awesome!

Hello fellow engineer and Starcraft player! As for your chances, your GPA could be better, but it's OK considering you're top 10%. Also, retaking the SATs could be a boon to your app. You have pretty good ECs so thats going to help. If you want to do biomedical you should apply ED to Duke. If you want to get into a quality engineering program, you should consider ED to Cornell. Both are reaches without ED but ED makes them quite attainable. Carnegie Mellon is a high match as is USC, UMich, and UNC. All the UC's save UCLA and UCB are matches to safeties. UCB and UCLA are low reaches. I think UIUC is a match. JHU will be a low attainable reach. Good luck.

Please chance me at:

This is probably a stupid question but High Match = better chance than a Low Match right

I really want to ED to Cornell but should I really waste it on Cornell if Cornell's already too much of a reach right now?

Heading over to your thread atm. More chances would be great
