*Updated* NYU & Columbia Chances?

Hi all. I'm currently a high school junior who posted a similar thread a few weeks back. Now that I have more information about what my end-of-year stats will look like, I'd really appreciate someone taking the time to chance me for NYU and Columbia.

Age: 16
Gender: F
Class Rank: 15/652 (final rank will be released in 9/2013)
UW GPA: 4.0
W GPA: 4.97/5+

PSAT: 227
AP Tests: World History (5), European History (5); Chemistry, APUSH, Statistics, Calc AB, English Language TBA

Summer Activities: Volunteer at public library (80+ hours), Iowa Young Writers' Studio, Bard College Young Writers' Workshop, nanomedical research at nationally recognized facility
Extracurricular Activities: Piano, creative writing (have won 2 region-at-large awards with Scholastic Writing), freelance journalism (write articles for a figure skating website), editor of public library newsletter, Science Bowl Club (served as secretary and VP), National English Honor Society (volunteered with various events), National Honor Society, teen volunteer at local hospital
Awards: Qualified for Texas State Solo & Ensemble, Regional Gold Key & Honorable Mention for Scholastic Writing Awards, 2nd place at Houston Science Fair in 9th grade

I think I'm a pretty decent writer who can put out some good essays, along with very good recommendations from my English and math teachers. For some background info, I've also had a recurring struggle with depression since the 8th grade, but I probably won't mention it in my application. My other college choices are UT Austin, Vanderbilt, Rice, and Berkeley.

Oh, and I'm absolutely smitten with competitive figure skating--watching, writing, analyzing.

So, what do you think?

Columbia: Reach (your best bet is to ED there if you can afford it)
NYU: Low match (becomes a safety if you do ED)
Vanderbilt: High match
Rice: High match
UT-Austin: Safety
Berkeley: Match (can you pay full-freight?)

You’re Ivy material. Of course, most Ivy-material people don’t actually get into Ivies, so don’t count on it, but your stats are excellent. You’re in at NYU.

NYU and UT Austin may as well be safeties.
Berkeley is a match.
Rice is a low reach
Vanderbilt is a reach
Columbia is a high reach. << Good luck with this one. You deserve it, but getting into high reach schools is mostly just luck>>

Keep one more safety college, and add one or two more high reaches. You seem like a very artsy person, so I think you should consider adding Yale if you haven’t already.

With scores like that you’re 100% into NYU but the Ivies are unpredictable. You might want to consider taking AP Biology since it sounds like you’re interested in a medical profession, and it would add more rigor to your record.

As everyone else has said, Austin, Berkeley, and Rice seem probable. Vanderbilt is very possible but a bit more of a stretch.

Mind chancing me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1516563-help-first-generation-college-student-rather-confused.html

Columbia: High Reach
NYU: Low match, pretty much in
Vanderbilt: High match
Rice: High match
UT-Austin: Safety
Berkeley: Match

Advise NOT bringing depression into your essays. If you have dealt with it, it is irrelevant to your application. If you haven’t, well…that is another story.

If you are, as you say, “absolutely smitten with figure skating,” by all means make that the subject of an essay. No topic – especially if essential to YOU – is off the table. And that could be a really intriguing and inventive essay, if approached from different angles.

Columbia is a reach for everyone, with a 6.7% admissions rate this year. If it IS your first choice, by all means risk applying ED.
