Updates to Top 25 Apps

I think I have read everything on this topic from the last two years, and I'm still not confident about what to tell DS re: sending updates to his apps to colleges. We would really appreciate any opinions or info about your experiences. Here is the scenario:

DS got most of his apps sent in very early (just after the EA deadline). Since then, he has received two national awards and a substantive feature news article was written about him and his participation in one of his top extracurriculars which could not be fully flushed out/explained through his application.

He is trying to figure out if and how to update his apps. He asked his interviewer from a Top 10 how that school would prefer to handle it and the interviewer was very enthusiastic about including the two additional awards and the link to the article in his recommendation after the interview. So, my son emailed his interviewer from another Top 10 to ask how it should be handled with that school (we have found no guidance on the school website) and he hasn't heard back from that interviewer.

DS doesn't want to be a nuisance, but at least one Top 10 wants to hear about these sorts of things. Do any of you have any experience with updates to Top 25s--as in, which schools want updates and which do not? For instance, we have gotten the impression that Yale probably does not. Is this accurate? Any advice is appreciated!

I say this kind of thing (national award) could help a lot, and get the info to all of them (including Yale). I would email the admissions rep for his region if he knows who that is. If not, send an email to the general admissions email with the information.

By all means, do so. My kids all did when there was anything to add. If mid year grades are a good showing, ask the counselor to make note of that. We sure did with our son who was on an improving trend and made a 4.0 that first term senior year. They’'ll see it but with a note, will also absorb the info.

Thank you SO much for your help. Of course, as soon as I got concerned about not telling him the right thing, DS heard back from the interviewer who had not responded that, yes, he should send the information. He is going to sit down tonight and send it out to all of his schools.

Thanks again for the advice!
