I'm thinking of applying to Stanford for REA. I also have some other CommonApp colleges I want to apply to as Regular Decision. Once I send the application to Stanford early, will I not be able to update the application or essays for the RD colleges? It says on the CommonApp that I should not 'customize' the essay for individual colleges.

It says that you shouldn’t, but you still can. I believe you submit the commonapp to each college individually online. Unless you click “Submit to all” you should be able to alter the application after submitting it to Stanford.

Unless the common application policies are now significantly different from last year, you can definitely still modify your application after you’ve submitted a copy of it to your early action school.

the different versions feature isn’t yet active for this application season. Beginning Oct. 19 we will be able to save different versions of the common app for different schools.

you will have to submit an app to at least one institution first, then log out, then click on https://commonapp.org/application/applicantlogin.aspx?allowcopy=true then log in from there. then click on replicate. then use drop down to select which version to work on. once that’s all done, you won’t use that special logon link again. from then on you log on just the way you do now. Any uploads will have to be re-uploaded to each alternate version you create. You will be able to move your my colleges from one version to another, but they can each only appear on one version.

there’s a help page on the college app website where I got all this info

you CAN modify any parts of the application after you submit it to certain colleges. However, commonapp explicitly states that you shouldn’t use different essays for different colleges. Basically, you can change the rest but you shouldn’t change the essay.
