Updating Application with a New Award

So recently I received a major award from one of my major extracurriculars: volunteering for an international not-for-profit organization. I want to let Yale know about this, but I'm not sure how to do it. Do I just email the Admissions Office? Do I mail/fax in a letter?

I looked at all the past threads I could find on this topic; they said just emailing Admissions is fine, but that was for other schools. Does it apply to Yale as well?

I also found this on the Yale FAQ:

"3.**** Jane Austen asks: I forgot to include something in my application/ I need to change something on my application but I have already applied.* How can I fix this?

You may send a short letter with the additional information (by regular mail) to the admissions office so that we can add it to your file.* Be sure to include your application number and other identifying information (such as your birthday) to make processing easier.* You can also fax this information to our office at 203-777-6120."

Does this apply to new information (such as awards) received after the application is submitted as well? Or should I just email the Admissions Office, no big deal?

LOL: If you mail your new award, it will probably get there near decision day or after. Decisions are probably finalized for everyone anyway but you should email your regional adcom if you truly believe it makes a difference.

Okay, fair point. But if I email them now, won’t it still be added to my file so that if I’m deferred, it’ll still be “new information” that they can consider during the RD round?

Wait until decisions come out. If you are deferred, Yale will include instructions (last year, I believe you would fax) on how to update them on new achievements.

But would they really have finalized all their decisions already? My dad wants me to send it in now; he doesn’t believe that they would’ve finished going through all the EA apps already. Besides, he says, even if they are done I should still send it in anyway because they’ll add it to my file so that if I’m deferred, it’ll be considered in the RD round. I really don’t want to go against him…

…then why are you asking anyone here?

Why don’t you follow the instructions and fax it?

^^ I second Hunt’s call to fax a note about the update. Paper spewing out of a fax machine demands IMMEDIATE attention, whereas an email can sit there for weeks until they get around to opening it.

Thanks everyone for your input.

I talked to my guidance counselor today. She called the Yale regional admissions officer, who gave me her email and said I should just send her an update directly via email.
