Updating Your Livable Outdoor Space

I’m personally not a fan of an accent wall. A sunroom (to me) should be fresh, light more minimized on details because your decor is the outdoors (assuming there are lots of windows/light since it is a sunroom). Also consider if a darker wall might fade with the sunlight.

Can you post a pic of a sunroom pic you see that appeals to you? That would help us know your style.

Here are a couple of examples. What you want to notice is HOW YOU NOTICE the green/blue of the trees, plants, sky outside. Nature is your decor!

Hmm - you are right about the accent wall color fading. The sunroom is facing south and gets a lot of sun. The carpet that was in there earlier had faded so much that you couldn’t tell what the original color was

I am leaning towards a light, bright, airy look for the room. Might do a low slung conversation set - nothing too formal. Will likely have to find a rug to tie everything together. The furniture will be exposed to sun only - no other elements.

@BunsenBurner - I wish I could spend $$$ - H would be horrified! I’d settle for $$, maybe replace the cushions in a couple of years.

I’d stay with the “bring the outside in” vibe. Neutrals–beige, white, add green, brown, blue depending on your outside environment. Focus on some texture with accessories. Use pops of color in pillows etc. Go crazy with a neat area rug if you like. Buy the furniture first. Use the crazy color in the most easily replaced elements. I know paint color is cheap but painting can be a lot more work than replacing pillows or an area rug.

Art work can be the first thing to fade. Put it behind UV glass if you cherish it and put it on a wall that doesn’t recieve direct sunlight.

You’re asking for furniture suggestions.
What size is the room?
Where is the sliding door and window walls located?
What’s outside? Lake, garden, yard? How large is that area? Not everyone is interested in “bringing the outside in”. Does this space do that or is the main purpose increasing the house size?
Is this a year-round space? If you have “regular” furniture is it protected from heat/humidity?
Current flooring?

We don’t have a sunroom but do have a large screened porch. The walls and tile floor are white and the ceiling is a light blue/green (Benjamin Moore Blue Bonnet 2050-70.)

Room & Board has some nice outdoor furniture, and it’s made in the US. I bought a pair of their Alcove chairs to supplement existing furniture that got new cushions.

We have a Baron Ash set that we love, is very comfortable, and it’s holding up really well. Not sure if it fits in your price point as I don’t known Hanamint.

I agree with keeping the walls white and the palate neutral.

What are you hoping to use the space for? We primarily use our sunporch for eating and sometimes I will work in there. As such, there is a 4 person bistro table and a chaise. The big furniture is on the patio.

I noted all these have white upholstery. Love the look - but I know that would never work in our home

Sure it can work…just get that fabric designed for outdoor furniture. Sunbrella or equivalent.

I’m sort of with you! I was trying to just post a few pics that were neutral decor but taking advantage of the outdoors as the decor! You can sub in another neutral for the white and get the same effect. I think part of the point is not too much busyness in the room - like patterned cushions AND patterned rug AND busy art work on the walls AND lots of knick knacks.

I think there are lots of places you can purchase “sunroom” furniture. I think it just depends what you’re looking for - like a multi piece set? A couple of pieces? To get hard use or is someone just going to be sitting calmly and reading a book in there?

I mean Home Depot, Lowe’s, Costco, Home Goods, At Home, Target, furniture stores…it’s everywhere right now! Costco online might ship directly to your home - their stuff is not cheap but for the most part it is also not cheaply made.

Estate sales are cropping up all over our town this time of year, and may include patio furniture. Our neighbors just moved and their beautiful Frontgate furniture sold for a fraction of the price.

Furniture consignment shops as well! Lots of not new but great condition wicker, rattan, metal pieces.

Again, depends on the look you want. If it’s a year around sun room open to the rest of the house you also don’t need “outdoor” furniture - a normal couch/loveseat in a subtle green, blue, or whatever color you like can be fine. I wouldn’t put a heavy fabric like velvet or tweed in a sunroom myself - I would want it to be fresh and light but cozy.

Yes. That was our personal experience. We bought a fire stump from Costco online sight unseen. I was impressed at the quality. Their in store stuff also looks well made.

Serena and Lilly? Not cheap, but looks great in their catalog. If coastal/lake house is your vibe.

Room and Board has great outdoor furniture.

We do love to shop at Costco. Their patio furniture though might be a bit too much (big sets) for my small sunroom - we’ll see. I did look at some of the other places mentioned in this thread and it’s great for ideas - thanks all. @BunsenBurner - Room and Board offers free design services - I might just decide to take them up on the offer.

H now wants a hanging chair in one corner - argh!

An egg chair? We had these (outdoors under some cover) at a rental and we all - including H - loved them! Super cozy.

You can get the version with a stand. That way, no headaches about where to hang it securely.

Yes, I’ve seen those and like them. I just think this would take up too much space in that room. We did have a papasan chair in that corner earlier and it was so cozy - so wonderful for a nap. So, we might just end up getting something like that or the egg chair or a rocker-recliner - if H has his way
