Lol guys, I’ve been wondering about something… Do adcoms have moral dilemma like war soldiers?

Like on day 1 as an adcom, they feel really bad about sending applications into the reject pile, and flashes of the hopefuls they review through keep popping up in dreams. When they eat breakfast, they remember that one kid who loves to cook, but has bad GPA. When they watch NBA, they remember that one athlete who looks promising, but was finally rejected anyway.

But then after the 5th admissions cycle, they start growing indifferent to the thousands of hopefuls that go into the doomed reject box. The university moves on despite the gallons of tears shed. One day, they finally stop to think: What does being an adcom mean? What does life mean??? Then they marvel at their own numbness to the whole process and weep in the shower at the tragic loss of humanity.

Ok seriously what am I saying, I am so done.

@guyinblue - Yup!! From Bangalore!! Where are you from??
And btw, YOU are not the only average applicant here!! I am too!!
And even though my school is reputed and we have a counselor, she is useless. All she does is blabber on about random stuff!! So, I had to do most of her work and chase her for the recommendation(though it was quite lovely in the end)!! Heck, I got my laptop to school to make the teachers complete the Teacher Evaluations!! December was a heck of a month and I screwed up my exams!1
What is your prospective major??

It has finally sunk in that my prospect of attending Penn is almost zero! With average school marks, not so great SATs and EC’s in fields other than my applied major - my chances were very low anyway! And I think FinAid just hits the nail in the coffin!!

Any other International Student applying for financial aid??

@rishav17 - One of my best friends is studying in Bangalore, at Christ University. (Offtopic)
Im from Noida, (NCR) near New Delhi. Haha, glad to know that
Well my school is top five in Noida and is also the most challenging ACADEMICALLY, sets like the toughest home exams.
Even then, my counsellor, and my Vice principal were utterly clueless. I had to explain everything step by step to get it done. Had to chase them for weeks haha. It took me a month to get it all done, they also made me miss the early action deadline -_-

Yes same here. I gotta say, Im in the EXACTLY same situation. FinAid is just , uhh, id rather not say
Also, the competition among Indians -_-’

I’ve interviewed over 200 students in my years. I have no moral dilemma whatsoever saying good, bad or indifferent. I’m 100% certain these kids will have a successful college career. If they don’t meet my alma mater’s standards, that’s just the numbers. I like the students. But I don’t mourn for them whatsoever.

@guyinblue - I know some people in Christ!! Mainly due to MUNs!
Haha, my school is the same - and probably worse. We have something or the other going on every week & it is always the 12th standards who have to arrange it!! (Helps the ECs though) And after that they give us the toughest papers possible and make sure that NO ONE gets above 90%!!
What helped in the application process was that 4 of us - “really good friends” are in the same situation aid wise, stats wise and so we helped each other with info & stuff!!

And you got it right-engineering!!
I was going to apply for environmental engineering but then decided to go in with electrical engineering & probably minor in energy & sustainability!! I want to do something combining engineering & the environment!! Don’t know what really!!

@Andreaval - Is there a particular reason why Penn is need-blind towards Mexicans & Canadians??

@rishav - haha, my school is pretty much the same. They feel like the school is full of children who are multitalented, which is so wrong
Yes tell me about it! There have been times when I have the pre boards the next day and I am at school helping teachers organize an IT Fest. haha. It has been fun though. School’s been a real gem
No friends applying abroad :|

An engineer who wants to save the environment! Nice Im sure youll be giving the JEE too huh? All the best for it! College is all about discovering yourself so youll have loads of time to decide!

@rishav17
I don’t know for sure, but I’m guessing it’s some kind of neighboring thing. Various universities in the US have scholarship or FinAid programs for neighboring countries (Canada and Mexico), so I’m guessing it might be similar to those.

@guyinblue - We had to organize & conduct a candlelight march last night for the Delhi victim yesterday - after our literature exam and before our Physics exam!! That is so senseless!!

Well - I don’t really know how to combine my interests and yet have enough scope for change - so ya I’ll find out once I’m in college!! And well I’m writing the JEE but am not studying for it!! I am hoping to go and somehow clear it, like my SATs!!
What about you? Applying anywhere in India? St.Stephens perhaps?

@andreaval - Is it some kind of “government level” deal? or Is it just the colleges’ own internal decision??

@rishav17 - Oh . nice of you to do that. I also participated in an awareness campaign after that Delhi incident. It seems it has awakened everyone all of a sudden. Rare to see movements like these. But I dont really think that the whole problem as a whole will be solved. We just look at solving the immediate problem at hand and not at changing the perspective.

Anyways, staying on topic. Thats one thing I like about US Colleges, they let you decide what you really want to do. Something thats unavailable here. Haha, nice. Dont stop believinnggg JEEs can be a real PITA. One of my friends went through it last year, haha he literally was absorbed by his book in the last 3 months.
Not decided yet, might give the CLAT or something. The cutoff for Delhi University is insane. 97 percent for Econ at Hindu and St Stephens. Too bad I belong to the General Category
Eventual aim is to join the govt as a policymaker/politician. So lets see. Whatever helps me get there ;)

Also, about the Mexico and Canada part. I think the US Govt provides Federal Aid to colleges to fund studies of students from these countries. Its just about the Govt playing a good neighbour you know. Thats my 2c could be wrong.
