What did you guys think of the new Ben Franklin essay question? Did it make you feel less compelled to apply to Penn? If you wouldn’t mind being quoted in The DP, email me- mamic@sas.upenn.edu

So can my counselor submit the Common App mid year report form online? I found a printable version, but I’m not sure how to access it through my own Common App account.

^ Your counselor must do it through HIS/HER account. The same way he/she did the school report!! If he/she sent the school report via mail, then I think you must send the mid year report by mail too!!

I want to double major in German and Economics. I applied to a bunch of places; the ones I like the most are Rice, Georgetown, Swarthmore, Tufts and Tulane. My favorite thing about UPenn is the German-speaking residential house. My favorite movie is called Good Bye, Lenin!.

^
Oh my god, love that movie!
Can I suppose that you come from a German-speaking family? Or did you learn it at school and are very good at it (that would be my Spanish, in my case)

One of my great-grandfathers was from Germany, but he died before I was born. I learned it sort of at school, starting freshman year, but mostly on my own I guess, because I’ve realized that most of what I learned was through independent study. I’m decent at it, but I’ve had to put a lot of work in, and it’s taken me a good three and a half years to reach about a C1 level on that one European scale.

I started taking Spanish this year, and that’s been a bit of a train wreck because I keep mixing up German into my Spanish now. xD

I don’t think I’m getting an interview because I live so freaking far away. God I just want to know the decision already! The waiting is killing me.

1) Majoring in something biology related. Pre-med HELLOOO
2) Way too many. I applied to so many reaches that I ended up adding a thousand safeties…I’m serious, I’m like 70% of the college admissions industry this year hahaha
4) Was it just me or was Perks of Being a Wallflower a kazillion times better than I was expecting? I’m obsessed.

@cruxclaire random question, how did you practice on your own? I’ve been taking French in school since 4th grade and I still don’t feel very comfortable speaking a lot and have a really hard time understanding if people don’t talk slowly. I would love to be fluent but I don’t know how to do that aside from going to a French speaking country which isn’t going to happen right now!

@kcw
Perks of Being a Wallflower DID exceed all expectations! I was skeptical about Logan Lerman because he wasn’t anything special in the Percy Jackson movie, but he pulled off the part amazingly! I also thought they might have had to water it down too much with the PG-13 rating, but all the important material was there.

I’ve just immersed myself as much as possible - I set my Facebook and iPod to German, listen to a lot of German music (that was good for vocabulary and pronunciation), watch films and TV series, read, etc. Listening to podcasts can be helpful in getting an ear for the spoken language (the newscasters speak more slowly and clearly than most speakers). Are there any books you know well and love in English? Maybe read the French translation - that will be helpful with vocabulary. Reading the first Harry Potter book in German gave me a whole new set of useful wizarding-world-related terms. :D

If you watch films in French, I’d recommend setting the subtitles to French instead of English, given you can at least figure out what’s going on. That way, your attention isn’t diverted from the Frenchness by the English subtitles, and you’ll be forced to think in French. When you think in French, you’ll probably absorb more of the dialogue, and in that, you can also improve your pronunciation by imitating the native speakers.
