Lots of episcopal students typically go to Penn

Less than 2 hours. It’s starting to hit me.

^ But I think that the DP article, and the poster who asked, were referring to residents of the City of Philadelphia. Several suburban schools–e.g., Episcopal, Shipley, Baldwin, GA, etc.–are also Penn feeders to varying degrees, but most of their Penn-bound students are not residents of Philadelphia.

I thought it said “penn area”. I took that to mean suburbs. Like in Boston, “Boston area” would include Cambridge, Lexington and other suburbs

^ Nope, it said “Philadelphians”:

BREAKING: Admissions numbers released | The Daily Pennsylvanian;

And, of course, this is the number of ADMITTED students, and not the number of those who will ultimately enroll in the Class of 2018.

BTW, Penn’s RD acceptance rate this year is 7.33% using released data…that is insane.

^ I come up with 7% (assuming that about 1,000 ED applicants were deferred to the RD round):

But you’re right, it IS insane. As one of the alumni commenters to the DP article stated, that means that 14 out of 15 RD applicants will be rejected.

If I was applying 2 years ago when the acceptance rate was generous I would be much more confident with myself.

I live in the suburbs and go to one of the “feeder” schools (we went 4/4 ED, but all to CAS and I applied to Wharton), so I hope that the stat is counting the suburbs.

^ It was just a little more generous: overall acceptance rate of 12% versus 10%, and an RD acceptance rate of 9-10% instead of 7%

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE WHO APPLIED! MAY THE ODDS BE IN YOUR FAVOR! Smiles and hugs to all of you exceptional, talented individuals. Don’t let any decisions tell you otherwise!

That’s a cheery thought haha.

I don’t think the acceptance rate has been “generous” for quite some time.

Well, at this point there is nothing else you can do but hope for the best. Good luck to all who are waiting for Penn Results!

I thought it said “Philadelphia area”. I took that to mean suburbs. Like in Boston, “Boston area” would include Cambridge, Lexington and other suburbs

^ Agreed, if it had said “Philadelphia area,” instead of “Philadelphians.”

It may be the area that falls into the Benjamin Franklin clause (a slight point in the applicant’s favor)- Philadelphia, Delaware, Montgomery, Chester, and Bucks counties.

Or, it could include parts of South Jersey and New Castle County, DE (or just Philadelphia proper).

^ Not sure what the “Benjamin Franklin” clause is, but Penn DOES favor Philadelphia residents to some extent, and I took the phrase “Philadelphians” to literally mean Philadelphia residents, as opposed to Philadelphia-area residents. But who knows (other than the Admissions Office, or course)? :)

That is what I have heard it referred to as in the past, but I was told that my school, a competitive private school in the suburbs, gets some extra consideration (but, it may just be the school in particular).

Let me make it clear that I am not expecting to get in, but am trying to think of reasons why I may get in, rather than reasons why I probably will not.

My bad I took it to mean the area. Could mean anything though.

^ Well in any event, best of luck to you–and everyone else here!

But keep in mind that with a 7% RD acceptance rate, there is inevitably a lot of randomness in these decisions. And if you aren’t accepted, it is in no way a reflection on you, your application, or your abilities. It’s a lottery, and your winning ticket is just somewhere else. And you guys will ALL do well no matter where you end up going to college, since your future success depends on YOU, and not the name on your college diploma. Those of us who have been around for a few decades since college know this very well. :)

I know. I would say that I am 75% confident that I will not be getting good news tonight, but I will do the whole stat post when I see.
