Upenn, Duke, and Georgetwon

I was lucky enough to be accepted at all three of these great schools. What advantages and disadvantages do each school have over the other. Which one has the best reputation? Which one is in reality the best? Any thoughts?

Well I think it would depend on what schools within the universities you got in (all of the above have multiple undergraduate schools), and it would also depend on what you were looking to major in, and pursue after college (grad school, any kind of job, etc)

If you’re looking for business, Penn is an automatic win. If you’re looking for the sciences, Georgetown is an automatic fail. Georgetown would probably have an edge in Political science, though.

All three have stellar reputations amongst those “in the know,” (with Gtown a tad lower perhaps) but in layman’s prestige Duke would be #1

^^^I’ve always wondered about this when it comes to Duke. Do laymen really know how great of an academic institution it is, or is it prestigious because its basketball program is?

I don’t know, does anyone around CC ever talk to laymen? Do laymen have internets? :P

Georgetown’s political science program is mediocre at best (it’s strength is in IR), although being in DC is a nice plus.

As bad a reputation as it gets, I personally like Philadelphia better than the other two cities. :)

hahaha i’m currently pondering the same question, except i also got into an awesome asian college with an offer that is hard to turn down
so i’m between penn (arts/sci)/duke/georgetown (sfs)

wow we are in the exact same situation ha ha

Penn is by far better than Duke and Georgetown in terms of prestige. The academics will probably just as good if not better than the other two as well. You also get the big greek life like at Duke + the great city as philly similar to how georgetown has DC.

IMO it’s a no brainer… Penn wins hands down

Go to Penn.

Chitown, I frequently post on a basketball message board with your average ordinary people (I’m not trying to be condescending). Out of curiosity, while in a game chat I asked the posters which school they think is best academically between Brown, Penn, and Duke. The decision was unanimous—Brown. There was no mention of Penn whatsoever, although Duke was refered to as the best party school.

In my opinion, from observing people’s reactions to my college acceptances, Duke is considered a good academic university, but few realize that it’s a top 10 college. The academic superiority is easily overshadowed by its athletics. A number of people don’t even know Penn is an Ivy-league, so I don’t agree with the assumption that Penn is more prestigious.

I don’t understand how Penn wins “hands down”, especially considering the fact that the OP didn’t specify any majors. While Duke and Penn are clearly better schools than Georgetown, there is little difference between the undergraduate programs at Duke and Penn.

my friend went to penn but it wasn’t prestigious enough so he transfered to the local community college

dude,i got into those exact same colleges, i am going to Penn, i think. i am going to a preview day on the 10th

duke - hands down…

The vast majority of people who get into those schools, choose Penn (over 70%). This is generally a meaningful metric.
