We got accepted into Upenn, Duke and Emory. Upenn gave us $0 in finaid, and Duke gave us a little over a $1000 in work study aid. Emory gave us a resonable amount in some kind of merit aid. We want to go to Duke, but paying $60K instead of $35K doesn't quite make sense . We are planning to go to med school , but is it worth investing so much money in a Pre-med degree . What are the chances of getting into Duke or Upenn med school after a pre-med in Emory ? Any thoughts /inputs highly appreciated.

Why do you speak in the plural? Are you conjoined twins?

Perhaps international student? My family has hosted many exchange students through the years and English pronouns are very difficult to get straight.

I once reported to a director in a very large company who held an MS from MIT, but had a very difficult time with pronouns as English was not his native language. He once confessed to that prior to large presentations he would become extremely nervous for fear he would use incorrect pronouns.

@mant2013,

If you are a parent, I understand the we/us, but it’s time to accept that you will not being matriculating with S or D. The forum is particular to individuals comments, even if you and S or D are sitting at the computer together. One of you should post and the other can read.

Rephrase your post and I’m sure you will get some helpful advice.

Used ‘we’ because I didn’t want my D reading the postings and connecting the dots. We already told her that she will be going to the college that offers the most aid. Seeking other opinions , to ensure we are not being short sighted.

kind of surprising that Emory gave you that much merit money, was your d an Emory scholar?

Her chances of getting into any med school will depend on what she does as an UG, not matter what school she attends, and attending Emory will not prevent her from attending any med school in the country.

Thinking about attending specific med schools as an entering fr is not a good idea, way too soon and unnecessary. I suggest you go to the Premed Topics forum and read some of the threads linked to in the Resources sticky thread at the top of the forum; some directly address the question of how to select an UG college.

You’re not being short sighted in considering cost, you’re being prudent.

Will do .

Thank you !

I can’t imagine any argument in favor of not taking the money. Emory has by far the largest medical system in Atlanta, and, I think far larger than Duke or Penn. Many, many more internship opportunities, likely more research opportunities. And because there is that $100k cushion, little to worry about in taking unpaid or poorly paid internships. On purely academic grounds, with money not an issue, Emory might be the better choice.

And $100k could go a long way toward med school.

To me, this is a no-brainer.
