UPenn ED Class of 2021 Discussion Thread

Daughter trying to decide to ED here or Columbia. Visited last week and loved it so thinking about dumping Columbia now…

lol I visited Columbia yesterday and it was beautiful and cold. Didn’t know it actually had a campus in the middle of the big city. Still love Penn more though

also to catch up with everyone else-
highest SAT 2290, superscore 2310
I got 800 on subject test math 2, but have no idea what else I’m going to take.
Oh, and my AP scores are complete. crap.

@Patel99 Haha, thanks! Good luck on your tests!

@yellooo do you still remember what the the math 2 test was like? Specifically was it really fast-paced with difficult math? Congrats on your scores!

Also I feel, even if I make it in I’m not gonna get any credit.

@Aztreas The math 2 test isn’t hard, but in my opinion, it was definitely a time-crunch. I barely finished. The questions get harder but generally people test well because the curve is so ridiculously nice. You can miss at least 6 questions and still get an 800. I would recommend to start studying earlier, so you can get better at the timing. Also, important note- get familiar with your calculator!!! The calculator makes things easier for the majority of the test. In fact, they want you to use it. As for the materials, I used Barrons. It overprepares you a tiny bit, but that’s helpful if you want an 800. If you don’t really need the perfect score, get Princeton Review.
Hope I answered your questions :slight_smile:

Hi everyone! I’m planning on applying ED to Nursing! I actually just visited Penn on Monday, and the campus is amazing. I highly encourage anyone who hasn’t visited to go if they’re able, it really does help get a sense for what the school is like.

@yellooo Thanks for the advice, it really helps a lot! But really, up to 6?? That is quite the curve, yet at the same time it really goes to show how difficult the test is too.

@sunrae ^^agree 100%

What a fun little thread. :slight_smile:

We’re officially the next group of apps they’ll be reading guys!
I have a 2380 superscored SAT (2310 highest sitting) and I’m either gonna apply to M&T or just SEAS. I’m trying to decide between ED here and SCEA at Harvard, Yale or Princeton

I’m deciding between ED columbia, ED Penn, SCEA Stanford, or SCEA Harvard

I know this is weird but I really can’t wait to start the application process, especially the essays haha. I need this school year to end.

So I’ve always wondered this, but is there a specific date that applications open, or can you work on everything right now? Someone told me that essay topics change annually and it has thrown my whole plan out of whack.

I would really like to apply ED to Penn, but a large concern is the financial aid. My parents recently bought a new house, so I guess their assets increased (which I hear decreases aid), and I would hate for them to be even more burdened (even though I reallyyy like Penn). Does anyone have any insight on this?

I’m in the same boat @dandelion101 I don’t know if EDing to any school would be in my best interest because of the aid situation. So I’m more considering the SCEA Ivies for early. If anyone had more insight on this I’d appreciate it as well.

If your parents are married and don’t own their own business or have complicated assets the calculator on the schools websites are generally pretty accurate. Buying a new house (as long as they don’t own more than 1 home) doesn’t hurt for financial aid. On the forms they ask how much the house is worth and how much they owe for the house so it is actually better to have a house that is mostly not paid for yet than an older house that is almost paid off. But definitely talk to your parents before figuring out where to apply because they may have a specific budget in mind even if they can afford more which could be a problem for ED and you may need to find some schools that are generous with merit aid.

Interesting article that I came upon in the Washington Post: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/grade-point/wp/2016/03/31/a-college-admissions-edge-for-the-wealthy-early-decision/

Dean of Penn said, “The academic credentials of students who win early admission tend to be stronger than those admitted later in the cycle.”

Just a topic for discussion… but would this mean that applying regular decision equates to a higher chance of acceptance for highly qualified students (who have a chance of being admitted ED) because they are competing with students who are not as strong as them… or is it better to apply ED where there is a higher acceptance rate but also students who are more competitive, have legacy status, etc.

Every school is different but even with all the extra admits ED (not EA) usually gives you an advantage because the school knows that you are committed to going so they don’t have to worry about if you will go or not and effect their yield. Some schools end up with more or less students committing early to their EA offers which can effect how many they accept RD. If you love a school and the numbers work for your family ED is a great thing but you need to be really sure on both.

@QueenOfBohemia Thank you so much!
