UPenn essays?

Which of the academic communities and social communities that now comprise the University of Pennsylvania are most interesting to you and how will you contribute to them and to the larger Penn community?
can I write about two social communities and not include an academic community?

And regarding the pg 217 optional essay, is it a page double-spaced, or a page single-spaced?

I suppose that it should be single spaced. After all, if it was in a real book, it would be single spaced, right?

Just curious…

Would it be possible to write it in “diary” form and actually hand-write it and send it to them via mail? Or is that too…out of the ordinary?

I have pretty decent handwriting for a dude…hahaha, so would that work? Do people actually do that?

don’t see why it wouldn’t work, as long as the content is equal to or greater than the presentation

that’s a clever idea, Heplayer92!

regarding the main essay:
can I write about two social communities and not include an academic community?

i have that same question! but in a more broad sense, is the supplement question asking strictly for one academic and one social community, or does it just want generalizations of you want to do, like for example

you can talk about only social, or only academic, or both

^Right, that was actually my question.

I was planning on writing about only one social community, and I was wondering if it would appear that I ignored the other part of the question. It seems like if you were to include both, it might not flow right, if the two are very different.

so would it make sense to include just two social communities rather than one of each?

…anyone?

yea…i have the same problem…i’m talking about an academic community…and then suddenly, im like “and know i want to do this social activity x!” haha…no, those were not my words…but im saying the transition is awkward…idk…its probably open-ended…and it is the first year i believe penn is using this essay prompt, so they may not know what to expect, you know?

i just found out (i am not going to say the source) that it is NOT at ALL neccessary to talk about both communities. One is great.

wait…what?! then you wouldn’t be answering the whole question!!!..

would anyone else like to say something? :P

See what i understood from someone was that it is fine if you show great interest in one of the 2 aspects then semi interests in 2.

Guys i’m thoroughly confused.

Is the prompt asking me to pick one community from the prompt? (“…the Union Fire Company, the Library Company of Philadelphia, the American Philosophical Society, Pennsylvania Hospital, and, of course, the charity school that evolved into the University of Pennsylvania.”)

Any help would be appreciated.

no, it’s asking you to pick a community (on campus) you might actually join today if you were a penn student

“3. Benjamin Franklin established the Union Fire Company, the Library Company of Philadelphia, the American Philosophical Society, Pennsylvania Hospital, and, of course, the charity school that evolved into the University of Pennsylvania. As they served the larger community of Philadelphia, each institution in turn formed its own community.”

this seems just to be an introduction, or some information to use if you need it. Like the quote before the SAT essay question.

“Which of the academic communities and social communities that now comprise the University of Pennsylvania are most interesting to you and how will you contribute to them and to the larger Penn community?”

the imp. word is “and”. they want both academic AND social communities that most interest you.

so we’re getting many different replies on this topic

does anyone have an answer based on a credible source?

im working on this essay right now and im a little stuck/confused…
can someone give some examples of possible communities that could work? if you dont feel comfortable sharing the one that you are using then you can just list some other decent examples…
would like a specific college or like greek life be too vague/unoriginal?
