Hey, I’m really interested in going to UPenn. Most likely I am going to apply early decision there. What are my chances?
School
-3.9 GPA
-top 7% out for 400 kids
-from a small, poor town in Missouri
half Dutch and half Indian (My mother is from India, Dad is from Namibia)
-male
-ACT is 32 (most likely will be a 34-36 by September, I have been taking tons of practice tests
Full IB and AP course load
Extra-Circulars
-NHS
-Basketball for 2 years
-Soccer for 4 years (captain)
-FBLA state qualifier
-DECA international qualifier (1st at state)
-Tresurer of FBLA (school chapter)
-DECA president (school chapter)
-Eagle Scout
-I have been working 3-4 days a week at a local restaurant for the past 2 years (note I lock up the restaurant and have access to keys…shows responsibility)
-starting internship with a very large construction company (company is worth around $1 Billion)
-also have done volunteer work ~ close to 200 hours
Overall, it looks good. However, UPenn is an Ivy and is highly selective, so it is difficult for anyone to get in. I’m not seeing a lot of leadership (maybe I just don’t understand all of your extracurriculars), so that would be a good thing to develop.
Idk what @yonceonhismouth is talking about because it literally says captain, treasurer and president- to me, that’s good enough. Over stacking on leadership positions is NOT what colleges want to see- they want to see meaningful contributions as a leader.
In terms of actual chances- I think that the fact that you’re from a “small, poor town” plays to your advantage. Maybe report your stellar AP scores to show that you’ve done well despite coming from an underprivileged background? Extracurriculars look great, I think you’ll be fine.
