UPENN in reach?

Is getting into UPENN possible for me? Our high school is located in PA and consists of about 3700 students (only grades 10-12) with our class having about 1200 students. I’m in the top 5% of my class. I just finished 10th grade and want to know my chances of getting. Any advice on increasing those chances will be greatly appreciated!

All Ivy's are reaches!!!! you def. have the grades but, still a reach.

it is a reach (esp from pa where there are a lot more applicants). apply ed and i tihnk you have a great chance. good luck!

Good grades, you definitely have a possibility to get into Penn. Kinda off topic, but you go to a GIGANTIC high school.

If the trend of more and more B's continues, Penn will fall out of reach. Land close to straight A's junior year and you will in good shape; pretty impressive SAT's for a soph as well.

Would it be wise for me to stop volleyball and soccer and concentrate more on academics? I know with the extra free time I could get will def. let me get straight A's and excellent AP scores.

As for the gigantic school, I think were the largest school in PA, not sure nationally though. You should see the traffic jams that occur.

When I was talking with my counselor about attending Penn, she told me that generally because I am instate Penn accepts only 2 students from each high school, which makes it ALOT harder for me considering our school size!

As you point out, you are in the top 5% of your class--meaning out of a class of 1200 you rank in the top 60. Let's presume that Penn takes 2 out of each school (like your counselor said)--but for your school--because it's so large, they take three times that many. That still means you need to move from 60th in your class to 6th in your class to have a shot. In reality, it's probably more like moving to the top 1% or up to 12th--but you see the problem, don't you? Even with only two Bs you still have a ways to go. First you have to get all As this year, then you have to do well on the AP tests, then you need to get the SAT I verbal score up to 730+ and you need three SAT IIs above a 740 to 750 average.

Lastly, let's discuss your ECs (extracurriculars). Who's who is nothing but a scam (you pay to get on the list), you don't have leadership positions in any of the clubs--and you don't mention any accomplishments--and the sports are both at JV level--meaning you won't play in college unless you can move up to varsity level next year--which hopefully you can. Also, the key club service needs to be specified--lists like this won't cut it.

Keep working and you'll have a good chance--and good luck to you.

Calcruzer hit it pretty well. I'd say the most important area you need to improve on is leadership. It should be easy to do that now that you'll be an upperclassmen. It also wouldn't hurt to be on the varsity teams.
