UPenn pre-med or nursing hopefuls?

I was looking at the threads and I didn't see many people talking about the medical field. Has anyone applied to UPenn as an undergrad in the hopes of having a career as a doctor or nurse? I applied to the School of Nursing and am anticipating an answer as I just had an interview (on campus) this past Friday. Any other hopefuls?

What time was your interview on Friday? We were visiting the campus on the same day.

really? my interview was at 3:30 but i did the information session and the tour at 1:00 and 2:00

haha, so very many people come in as premed / pre-health, it’s crazy

i did, but then i changed my mind

what made you change your mind? im devoted to nursing. i have heard that pre-meds change more

My daughter’s nursing interview was at 11:00 on Friday with Marianne. We also did the admissions session at !:00 and tour at 2:00.

Ooo you were the 11:00? i think i remember seeing your family and i think you were in my tour group. im from nyc

Was your tour guide Adam?

No, I had a female tour guide. Now Im disappointed that I didn’t have a chance to meet you and your daughter because it’s hard to come by fellow nursing applicants.

Well, I know that Marianne had a 12:00 interview with a male student. Counting you and my daughter, that’s at least three from that day alone. Hopefully you and she will get a chance to meet at the admitted students visit day on April 9 & 10.

I know Penn is your first choice (as it is my daughter’s); what are your 2nd and 3rd choices?

My second choice is UVa and my third is constantly wavering between NYU and SUNY Binghamton. Marianne was telling me how she can see me wrestling with UPenn and UVa, but i told her UPenn will remain #1 to me. What are you daughter’s 2nd and 3rd choices?

She also applied to UVa, but it might be third on her list after Case Western Reserve. That might change after we visit UVa (which we will do if she is accepted). Have you visited UVa yet?

Marianne also told my daughter how she could understand her wrestling with the choice between Penn, Case and UVa…and all the reasons why she should choose Penn (as though it were a matter of choice). Like you and probably every other potential nursing student, my daughter also told her Penn was definitely her #1 choice.

Did Marianne also ask you whether your teachers and counselors were suggesting that you should go pre-med instead of nursing? I think that is an issue for Penn. Students smart enough to get into Penn Nursing are often those that choose a pre-med “major” at other schools.

Marianne asked me if I have been asked to explain why I chose nursing. I have applied to all my schools as a nursing applicant. That is why UPenn is my #1. They are dedicated to fully developing the potential of all nurses with an emphasis on advanced practice, which I have planned on doing since the beginning.

I do understand how Penn sees the pre-med major thing as an issue. From my research, I have seen some students try to go into Penn as a nursing major, but with the intention of taking “pre-med” classes. Others have a “change of heart” when they get into the nursing program and switch majors.

Many people have told me I’m smart and I’m settling for nursing. Has your daughter encountered this?

Yes she has. However, my wife and her sister are both RNs (BSN/MSN) and many people tend to temper their advice about “settling” for nursing. Like you she is determined to pursue advanced practice nursing (like her mother & aunt) and believes that Penn is the best place to complete that plan.

I have also seen a couple of posts from people that believe they will have a greater chance of being accepted into Penn if they apply to the Nursing college.

Have you visited UVa yet?

No, I have yet to have a chance to visit. I did attend a presentation by the Dean of Admins in NYC, though. Since Penn notifies acceptances earlier than other regular decisions, I will plan a visit to UVa if I’m not accepted into Penn.

My aunt is an RN and through her and research I was able to find out all the perks of picking nursing over pre-med. Its disheartening at times because many people I encounter tell me that nursing is for people who don’t want to try hard. Your daughter is really lucky to have two strong nursing figures in her life.

I don’t know about your daughter, but the anticipation for an acceptance letter is killing me. I really do hope I have the pleasure of meeting her at the admitted students visit days.

My daughter’s approach is that she refuses to allow herself to believe that she will be admitted into Penn. If anyone says to her “I think you’ve got a reasonable chance”, she immediately says “No way…it’s not going to happen and I don’t want to get excited about something that is not going to happen, however if I do get in…somebody is going to buy me that cashmere Penn sweater”. Nice to know that despite her nervousness about being accepted she is still focused on clothing.

I’m sure she would enjoy meeting you also. Her name is Elena and she is from W. PA. Hopefully neither her nor you will need to visit UVa because you will already be enrolled at Penn. Good luck.

Sorry to interrupt your conversation! I’m applying to the School of Nursing as well! I already had my interview this fall with Marianne. I loved Penn, so hopefully i’ll be accepted! If not, I applied to several other schools, where I know I will be just as happy :)

Not an interruption coolkitkat, we’ve been waiting for you! What other schools are you considering while you’re waiting for your Penn decision (like the rest of us)?

to answer the earlier question, i realized i was more interested in the management side of healthcare (after taking healthcare management courses in wharton)

and am now a management consultant in healthcare

What was your degree? Are you enjoying (and making decent $) working as management consultant in health care?
