My daughter was thrilled to receive an acceptance email today.
ACT ®: 34
SAT (ERW, M, Total): 1460
SAT Subject Tests: Didn’t take these because of pandemic
GPA W: 5.3
GPA UW: 4.0
APs (and scores): APLang, APUSH, AP Human Geo: 5s; AP Enviro Sci: 3; currently taking AP Calc, AP Art History, and AP Lit (her high schools have not had many AP class offerings)

State/Country: SC
School: SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities
Type of HS (public, private, etc.): public residential high school that students across the state can tryout to attend. Only about 100 students are selected each year, and in her the creative writing program (her discipline), there are 12-15 students selected each year.
Hooks: Writing and possibly geographical; otherwise, she is very typical of the majority of college applicants; One thing that no doubt helped a lot was she applied for the Junior year writing program at UPenn and was accepted into the camp last year. Although the in-person dorm experience never happened because of the pandemic, the school (thankfully!) held a virtual camp (even sending the kids a little care package of hot chocolate and things like that).
ECs: Girl Scout Gold Award, National Scholastic Gold Award writing winner in 2020, YoungArts writing honorable mention in 2020, and had writing published in national literary journals. She also had 4 years on a high school varsity tennis team, and helped the team win at state 2 years in a row. She likely is the top student (by GPA) at the HS, although they do not have an official ranking.

Sorry to hear this! It was a difficult year, and my daughter also received some hard rejection/waitlists.

Wow, in shock. My D was accepted with an invitation to apply for the Ben Franklin Scholar program (maybe everyone is asked to apply - I don’t know but it made her so happy.) She applied test optional as well. She received a full ride Jefferson Scholarship to UVA so it will be a tough choice and we’re visiting both this weekend. I actually thought most of Penn’s spots had gone during ED so never thought she had a chance!

If you’re interested send sincere, well thought out LOCI to these school stating (if true) that you’d attend if accepted and specifically why you’d be a great fit, classes you want to take, professors you want to do research with, together any new accomplishments. There will probably be more movement that usual on the waitlists. Good luck!

Just got accepted into Huntsman and in shock! Not the most amazing stats but I will share
ACT: 33 ss but went test optional
GPA: 5.3 uw
Class Rank: 2 out of 40
APs: 14 total (5 in progress) All 5s and one 4

I think what carried me was my Huntsman essay which I wrote on the structural fragility of the Latin American economy and my desire to help and change it! Congrats to all who got in!

Is the Benjamin Franklin Scholar better than the University Scholar distinction? The Penn portal has awards for both but says you can’t do both and must choose.

I was rejected from SEAS with 36, 4.0 UW, and all 4s and 5s. However, I got into Columbia, so I really do think how well you fit with the school is important.

Accepted for which major?

I think the rate is a little higher as you have to account for yield, but it’s still insanely impressive!
