*** UPenn RD applicants discussion thread ***

@james1998iq No, I believe that the consensus is that they do not prescreen.

@james1998iq Pre screening and shortlisting applicants only takes place for Harvard and Yale since they have limited alumni in other countries. But with an alumni network as robust as Upenn’s all across the world, pre-reviews of your credentials does not take place. Over 95% of the applicants are offered interviews. If you are from America, you would be considered an exception since almost everyone gets interviewed in America. But you also shouldn’t worry because you had nothing to do with not getting one.

What is applicant prescreening vs shortlisting? Does that only happen for internationals at HY?

prescreening implies that the admissions office reads first and directs interviewers to meet the stronger applicants.

I highly doubt that Penn’s alumni network is offering 95% interview rate for domestics. Penn admissions would be doing flips if that were the case. 2/3 is a realistic figure.

Any dual degree likelies yet?

@anotherdude I believe that last year they came out on the last day of February so we’ll see if any likelies come out. At the same time, many regular likelies had already come out. Really, we all just have to wait for a tweet from Eric Furda or something on the UPenn news site

Hi!! For all my fellow nursing applicants- if I never got an email from Marianne Smith requesting to talk, is that a bad sign? Also would you reccomend reaching out to her? Thanks!

In a major city like Houston they are quite close to being perfect, and the burden is on the student to show up. Penn and Brown set up group interview days where they are interviewing most of their applicants in 2 days. When I talked to the Penn alums at a group interview session, they mentioned they are covering most on two specific saturdays and then offering individual interviews to whoever couldn’t make it on one of those two days.

@c0llegeb0und1, when did you submit your common app? I think Marianne makes the calls in sequential order, and I know she was still emailing and calling applicants this past week. I don’t think you should reach out yet as you may still hear from her. Also, if you are international that may be reason for delay.

Maybe Penn is waiting to send out likely letters today (Feb. 29th), since it’s such a rare day? I know according to the timeline they’ve probably sent out LLs already, but has anyone actually received one? I guess I’m still holding out hope for one, however improbable that is.

You can still get accepted without a likely, it’s okay if you don’t get one

@MijoChbulkan This! I think in the midst of everything, we are forgetting that LLs only go to a small percentage of URMs, athletes, and top applicants. Good luck everyone, I hope we’re all accepted come March 31st

Last year, they sent out Likely Letters in two waves.

Someone said HY prescreens for international interviews. I highly doubt that is true, as neither state that in their policies. Do you have proof?

@northstarfx thank you so much! I actually submitted either a few days before the deadline or right at it lol, so I bet that’s the reason. I’m from Massachusetts so international isn’t the problem, but thank you for your insight! How long would you give it before I should shoot her an email?

@ShaunakK98 I don’t know about Yale’s international interviewing policies. From anecdote, yearly one hears the H int’l applicants constantly saying: “in the history of my school, no one has ever been admitted w/o an interview”. Also, H says they offer “limited” interviews in certain countries – although they cover themselves and say that having/not having one is no indicator of eventual admit/deny.

@T26E4 - What about the American policies for Yale? If someone wasn’t called for an interview in a City like Houston, does it have a negative connotation?

@texaspg Yale’s goal for domestic interviews in populated areas is 2/3. Last year, we hit 84% with herculean efforts. I think we’ll hit 70% this year.

I interviewed a kid at my local HS (which probably has a dozen applicants). I knew that only half of them had been (randomly) assigned. I told him to tell his nervous classmates not to worry. The numbers are that skewed – applicants:alumni interview slots.

@c0llegeb0und1 I would wait until the end of this week before sending an email to Ms. Smith from Penn Nursing.

I am curious how many other Penn Nursing applicants have not received an email/phone call from her yet? Anyone here want to chime in?

@c0llegeb0und1 I got an email/call from Marianne and I submitted my app the day before and my supplement the day of, so I think you could reach out to her now if you want
