UPenn transfer student?

Hi, I am from a state university from Illinois. This year, I got into Cornell as a transfer student. However, because of lack of financial aid, I will stay at my current university. This year, I will be a sophomore with senior standing (due to AP Credit). However, I want to attend UPenn for the Fall 2012 semester! I was wondering if anyone could chance me?

High School Stats:
ACT: Super score was a 30, 29 regular
SAT: Didn't take them
SAT II's: Didn't take them.
Had a weighted GPA of 4.65/4.00
Took 13 AP Classes
AP Scholar w/ Distinction
Did not take the PSAT's (stupid me lol)
Ranked 3rd out of 500 students.

College Stats:
Took 18 credits for both semester (total of 36 credits my first year)
Due to AP credit, most were courses for my major and were junior/sophomore level courses. One spanish course was at the 300 level. I have a gpa of 3.9 at this moment. The courses, in my opinion, were rigorous.

I am applying for Political Science and Spanish.

My passion is to become a doctor one day, working with Latino communities and lower income patients.

Recs:
Several recs from high school.
The most important in college include:

Research for Spanish
Helping the latino center at my school
Working with immigration organizations around Chicago and helping undocumented students
A Hispanic Medicine Organization
Homeless Shelter
I am also planning on helping at Cook County Hospital which is a free hospital to low income patients.

Also, here are some hooks:
Mexican-American (I guess you can call me that lol)
First Generation
Low Income
First to go to college
Activism with immigration reform within my state

As you can see, I didn't spread myself too thinly in college because I want to demonstrate my passion to help the Latino/undocumented community. I think UPenn would be perfect for me b/c of its environment, the resources they provide to undocumented students, and because I feel like I could change UPenn's community by making them become more aware of undocumented people. Also, I want to work within UPenn to initiate a form of the Dream Act within Pennsylvania.

Sorry for the extremely long message and misspellings (I was outside today and it's 106 F outside!!!). Please, I plan on working extensively on my essays as well.

I forgot to mention that I was a biology major but switched to political science b/c I am heavily involved in politics and I want to be able to develop my speaking/writing skills in order to become a better versed physician. And, Spanish because I want to retain my spanish fluency and maintain an appreciation of my culture.

Anyone? Please just one sentence of feedback!

Just wondering since I would like to apply to Cornell in the future…
What’s ur EFC? (mine is 0) what kind of financial aid did Cornell give you?

Your chances look good! just write good essays  keep it up!

Well, I am technically considered an intl student and because of that, I was given no financial aid. However, with an EFC number of 0, I’m 99.99% sure you will get a full ride. They have an online financial aid calculator. At the most, you will have to pay about 2000 dollars per year.

oooh i see that makes sense that they didn’t give you aid b/c you’re an intl student.

bumppppppp any `penn students please i need a chnace

Are you able to afford Penn?
[Penn Admissions: Financial Aid for International Applicants](http://www.admissionsug.upenn.edu/applying/aid.php)

For Non-Citizens:

“Penn will not admit a financial aid candidate for whom we cannot provide aid. As a result, some candidates we would otherwise want to admit will be turned away.”

“International applicants who anticipate the need for financial aid at any time during their four-year course of study must make this anticipated need known at the time of application.”

I’m sure this applies to transfer as well.

Good luck.

I’m sorry, you didn’t research this well. I am asking for a chance apart from the financial aid. Penn offers financial aid for Canadians and Mexican citizens and considers them as part of the domestic applicants. So, with that being said…BUMPPPPP

It’s hard to get into any ivy league as an international TBH, but your stats are excellent, very inspiring.

I didn’t read the Mexican part, and in actuality, it would have simply be stating that you wouldn’t be able to get in because of financials.

But, since you’re considered a Mexican international student, that doesn’t apply. Sorry I skipped over that.

Secondly, high school won’t matter much since you’re probably applying as a junior transfer.

Also, you have a stellar gpa, but it may hurt that some of your classes are Spanish (if your first language is Spanish). If your school’s Spanish department is similar to mine, then all undergraduate Spanish classes are very easy. (Especially for native speakers).

Aside from that, though, I think you have a shot. You seem very devoted and passionate, and if you demonstrate that clearly in your essay, I’m sure your interest in Spanish will be understood.

Thank you all, my stats aren’t the best, but I hope they will help me! I think my school’s Spanish department is a big more rigorous, but the reason I want to major in Spanish is because I want to become a physician. I feel that by learning about my language and culture will allow me to hold an intimate connection with them. And, thanks!

I think you should apply to a variety of school, not just Penn, as Penn might reject you not because of your stats, but your inability to pay.

That being said, your story is very well versed, and I strongly urge you to apply for transfer.

^I totally agree with Portmanteau! You should apply to a variety of schools-- not just Penn that will fit you/ will be safeties .

Bump, can anyone give me a percentage? Illl chance back!

Sent from my M860 using CC App

bumppppp please more feedback!

I really apologize to you if my words to your previous chance thread were arrogant. I was just considering the competitive pool since some of my friends with perfect GPA are transferring from GPA deflation schools like Berkeley. I think you should emphasize on your “Dream Act” stuff in your essays. That’s very special and impressing at least to me. Working on that will give you a really personalized essay. Vandy is not in GPA inflation btw. Good luck to you and happy new year!

its okay don’t worry about it  I wish you the best of luck tooo! also, bummpppp
