UPenn vs Drexel 7-year med

Exactly… And the last thing I want is to be jobless when I could’ve led a relatively cushy existence at the Drexel program. Worst case scenario, I won’t be able to handle it at penn. Im a hardworking student, but I hear those curves can be vicious. And as much as I love the prestige of having an ivy league undergrad diploma, how helpful is that in the job market?

collegecrazing - If you’re not really enthusiastic about research, then it sounds like high-powered academic medicine is NOT for you, and that you’d be happier at Drexel. Med school is tough wherever you go tho. The one downside of choosing Drexel would be if you discovered you didn’t want to become a doctor after all, and you find yourself four years later with a BS from Drexel rather than Penn.

Drexel has a large-ish med school and had pretty solid results in the match this year. Results change from year to year–students have different interests–but this will give you an idea of the typical residencies Drexel grads end up in.

Penn is a great school, but I know a number of UPenn grads looking for work right now with few good prospects. They are pounding the pavement with everyone else. My optometrist graduated from Penn, had a wonderful 4 years studying what she loved and enjoyed, couldn’it find work that she like and that paid what she wanted for then next several years, and then went back to school to become an optometrist and has been employed and well paid since. It’s not as though any decision is so final, and there are many ways to get where you want.

I do agree with Jane about the research. It can be very competitive getting research opportunities at a school like Penn, and getting a good reference from the right profs or pre med committee can hinge on your research experiences.

Trust yourself and go to Penn if you want to get into med research. If you would be happy as a practicing physician then go to Drexel and cut yur risk, although not totally as they still require you to maintain a certain GPA and take the MCAT.

Hi everyone, I ended up committing to Penn. Thanks for all of your advice, it really helped me make my decision!
