UPenn vs. Emory

So here's my dilemma...

I was offered a full tuition scholarship to Emory's Oxford campus (along with the opportunity of playing on their tennis team - a huge plus for me) and a 2/3 tuition scholarship to Emory's Atlanta campus. My financial aid offer for Penn sets my parental contribution at ~33k/year with no loans. This will significantly change my family's lifestyle, and although my parents assure me that it's perfectly fine, I still feel a bit guilty. I want to do pre-med and possibly do a MD/PH.D program at a top medical school.

What are your thoughts on where I should go? I'm posting this in Emory's forum too.

For one thing, see if Penn will match Emory's offer.

emory is well renowned for their medical studies

pre-med programs and the medical school are not the same thing

not to mention the fact that Penn is a lot more renowned for their medical studies...

If you wish to go to med school I would strongly suggest going to the college that will be cheaper. Penn might cost 33k a year now, but the tuition goes up every year and your financial aid might not (in fact, it might go down). A merit scholarship will only go away if you do not fulfill the requirements (min GPA). If the minimum GPA you need to maintain to keep your scholarship at Emory is over a 3.75 it will be very tough to keep while maintaining premed. I would say that it is worth it to go to Emory if it will end up costing less than half of what you will be paying for Penn.

I second that you should call Penn with your Emory offer and ask them to match it. I know one kid who took offers from two other Ivies and got Penn to knock like 15k off his tuition price...

Especially in a yield-sensitive year like this, they will be anxious to hold onto the admits they've got.

Then again if Emory's scholarship is merit based I can't see Penn matching a merit scholarship. Penn will match need based aid, especially against another top school, but I just don't think that it has the means to match merit aid.

Well, I don't necessarily need Penn to match Emory's offer dollar-for-dollar...any little bit helps in my case. So do y'all think they can knock a couple thousand off just for Emory's offer?

No point asking us. Ask Penn! :)

they can not increase your fin aid because you got a merit based scholarship at another institution (this would be a violation of the ivy league financial aid policy). however, as ilovebagels said, this is a special year so maybe you could appeal your fin aid decision and mention that you got a 2/3 scholarship at emory. maybe they will calculate your fin aid using a formula that is more favorable to you.
