I got waitlisted for UPenn and am now trying to find a way to increase my chances of getting accepted. I'm planning on sending a few recs and a letter of interest.
However, I'm a little concerned about some of the things I've found about UPenn's Waitlist system. Did anyone hear something about being placed "high" on the waitlist, or anything about tiers? My admissions letter didn't mention anything about "high" and the FAQ states that UPenn doesn't rank (which of course, may be a lie...)

My son was also waitlisted at Penn. His HS guidance counselor phoned admissions and got the name of the person who has his file. The admissions counselor was very gracious in her reply and stated that the waitlist is not ranked but rather each student is evaluated as openings occur, usually around mid-May. At first I wondered, but then realized that if you had admitted students to Wharton who went elsewhere (that would be mystifying!!!) wouldn’t it be natural to pull waitlisted students who were trying to get into Wharton? And the same for other specialized areas of interest…

You should absolutely express in writing your continued interest in Penn, and letters from others who know you well also wouldn’t hurt. Include any updates in your situation - new awards, recognitions, final class rank, etc.

Finally, that being said, keep moving forward and make certain you have somewhere to go next Fall - the schools that accepted you are excited to have you!! You probably also got scholarships so think about costs, particularly if you will be going on to post graduate work. You will do well wherever you go! Best of luck to you!!!

If we’re waitlisted, do you know which email we send the letters to?

When will they notify if you can off of the waitlist or not?
Also, will they only notify you if you got off of the waitlist, or will they notify you regardless of whether you get rejected or accepted?

Mid May is what I’ve heard for getting pulled from the waitlist, but don’t give up hope - some of the kids who have been on the waitlist may have moved on and they will keep pulling from the list until the class is filled. Direct letters and emails to your region’s recruiter - enlist the help of your guidance counselor or the alumni who did your interview. Either should be able to get you a contact name. Once the class is complete I would guess that a final letter will be sent to give everyone closure. Good Luck!
