UPenn Wharton

Hi, I’m currently in high school, and I’m starting to get a grasp of the whole college process. At this moment, my dream school is the University of Pennsylvania, specifically Wharton undergrad. Obviously Wharton is very well known and prestigious, and many consider as the best business college. My question is, is it harder to get into Wharton then other schools at UPenn? Are the acceptance rates lower for business applicants, then say french majors?

I have looked into this a little bit, and I have got mixed feedback. Thank you for your help!

Yes

Both Wharton with the Penn College of Arts and Sciences are very selective, with acceptance rates for Regular Decision in the 7% range. Wharton has a slightly lower acceptance rate. Wharton is very much part of Penn. So, with a few exceptions, Wharton courses are open to all Penn students. Wharton, for example, is the home of statistics and accounting courses so it’s quite typical for econ majors to take courses at Wharton. This said, transfer to Wharton from another college at Penn is quite difficult so best is if you want a degree specifically from Wharton is to apply to Wharton.

Thank you very much @fogcity

bump

Another clear “yes.”

Why are you bumping the thread? You asked questions and people gave you the answers. Wharton is tougher to get into.

I think there is more to the answer. From a general perspective yes, Wharton is harder. But there are more important details that have to be asked…

Take a student who clearly struggled in all sciences throughout high school, and although they took the highest level of calculus, it’s clear they weren’t suited for math. Say this person has been interning at Big 4 accounting firms throughout high school, and has taken every business class his high school offers. Maybe he even started up a small company. I would think this student will have a more difficult time getting into Engineering than Wharton.

Take that as you will, but fit plays a role.

Thank You, I will take this into consideration! @jamesjunkers‌

On Penn’s admission website, it states that the acceptance rates for each school are roughly the same.

^acceptance rates are the same but applicant pools are different.

No where does it state acceptance rates are the same. It is widely assumed Wharton has a slightly lower rate

“Is it more competitive to get into some of the schools at the University over others?
Some of our schools look for particular skills sets or strengths, but the overall admission rate for each of the four undergraduate schools is equally competitive.”

“Admissions speak” . . . what would you expect to be said?

Huh, interesting. I guess they’re going with a very vague definition of equally competitive. Per 45 Percenter on a different thread:
"1. For the Class of 2014, Nursing’s acceptance rate was 20%:

  1. Also for the Class of 2014, SEAS had 4,791 applicants, of which 811 (or 16.9%) were accepted:

(The link has been altered but I’m assuming it was correct)

  1. The overall acceptance rate for the Class of 2014 was 14.3%, out of about 27,000 total applicants:

Clearly they do not have the same acceptance rates. Wharton is presumably more difficult.

Penn has never officially released the acceptance rates of each school.
