i recently got accepted to UPitt main, and i live all the way on the other side of PA (philadelphia area). i was just wondering what the weather was like; i've heard it gets really cold. how's the winter and spring time? i have a north face denali and i dont know if that'll be enough to keep me warm.

If your North Face Denali will keep you warm in Philly then you’ll be fine with it in Pittsburgh. It’s probably 5 degrees colder in W. PA during the Winter but Philly gets a lot more snow.

my D is in the same situation we live in Philly and just bought a warmer winter coat. Pittsburgh is a little colder than Philly and gets more snow than Philly. Pittsburgh gets that “Lake Effect” snow they always talk about on the weather. Currently today in Pittsburgh they are predicting a high of 24 degrees and snow showers.

Only when the Nor’easters hit Philly as snow instead of rain. According to the National Climate Data Center (NCDC), the average annual snowfall for Philadelphia is 21", Pittsburgh is 43".

We’re seeing that now. Pitt has had show showers over the past week, but we haven’t gotten anything in the Philadelphia area. However, if a Nor’easter roars up the coast in Jan-Feb, Philly has the potential for 20+" from one storm.

I’ve lived in both areas and I honestly think that the Philly area “feels” colder. It has higher humidity and more wind. Philly does have slightly more sun. Most of the “lake effect” snow becomes rain or flurries before it gets as far south as Pittsburgh. All in all, I doubt if you will feel that there is that much difference between the two.

Pittsburgh has harsher winters than Philly. You will want a warm coat and gloves when you walk from the dorms on 5th Avenue up to the Petersen Events Center for B-ball games, especially the night games. Like any place with altitude, it is colder the higher up you go. The dorms on the hill are closer to the the Pete, but the dorms down along 5th and Forbes are closer to the CAS classes.

My D grew up in a Philly suburb, is now a freshman at Pitt. She has asked for a warmer winter coat for Christmas…the Northface she wore around here is not enough at school.

But I think that it’s a difference in lifestyle rather than difference in weather. In high school, she only had to get from the school bus or car in the parking lot onto the school, then she was inside and warm the rest of the day. At college, she walks outside for blocks to get to classes.

I’m a student at Pitt and I’m from philly. trust me, it’s definitely colder in pittsburgh. a Northface is fine for the first couple of months of fall but the winter starts getting pretty cold, get a warmer jacket. but if you have a warm jacket, gloves, and a hat you’ll be fine. just keep in mind you’ll have to walk a lot and you don’t want to freeze every time you have to go somewhere.
