I applied to Uchicago EA and I selected my major as English. Would it be helpful to submit some creative writing samples? I have already submitted an extra letter of rec, and I am afraid that I am giving the admissions officials too much to read (including my long essay for Uchicago, two short essays, three rec letters, and the common app essay) Should I just hold off on these pieces or show more creativity?

Well, a UChicago student, parent, or admissions officer would probably have a better idea of what the school is looking for than I would as a fellow applicant, but I’d say that it depends on the length and subject matter of the writing pieces you’re already sending.

If you feel that your extended essay, Common App essay, and/or supplemental recommendation give the admissions people a good measure of your creative writing skills, then I would lean towards not sending them any more writing. This is especially true if your other essays are longer, since you don’t want to inundate the poor admissions officers with piles and piles of writing no matter how good it is.

If you don’t think that the essays and recs you already sent get the message across, then it might be a good idea. Good luck with your app! :D

Okay, thanks so much for the great advice! Good luck to you too!
