Upper Body Strength

I just got my appointment package today. I was wondering what I should do to prepare physically. I am a pretty good runner but my upper body strength is about average. What exercises do you guys recommend doing?
Thanks,

Katherine

push-ups, pull-ups or flexed arm hang, lat pull-down, diamond push-ups, and ranger claps.

ranger claps?

Put your arms straight out to your side while standing up then start raising them above your head while still straight and clap. Continue doing this for awhile and its tiring. But a break compared to push-ups and such.

arm circles are great too, and they kill. try doing them to the side, out in front, up at 45 degree angle (side and front). Do about 25 or so to start, rotating forward and backward at each place before moving to the next.

in other words:
arms to side 25 forward.
arms to side 25 backwards.
arms in front 25 forwards
arms in front 25 backwards.
arms side 45 degrees... u get the point

hm... usually, what do they make you do the most in BCT?

depends on the squadron. all i think do push-ups and flutter kicks. we did a lot of ranger claps and arm circles too. but it varies on the squadron you're in. some do a lot of body builders (body builders=death)

We had death by diamonds during 2nd BCT.

we had unlimited flutterkicks in hidden fields...

"=death"

"unlimited"

"death by"

eh..... sounds "fun"

oh, its great times. after the fact, you don't really think about those parts much.

hum, I feel sorry for 2011, pretty much everyone will be issued Bates instead of Bellevilles for boots which are a bit heavier. That combined with the lightness of the new Corcorans I got will make flutter kicks hell for 'em. :)

hornetguy, weared you go to get your boots?

Go down to the community center (across the parking lot from the BX) where the military clothing store is and they have a selection. I got the Corcoran Field II boots. All leather.

If you have access to a bench press it will make lifting your body seem like cake. It build lots of muscle in your armpit/pec area. When I was in high school my max on bench was around 250 so I could do push ups all day no problem.

renix --
i bench in gym and such quite a bit too, but i find it doesn't help my pushups and stuff very much. where do you put your hands (close in or farther out) for working the same muscles as pushups??

same place as where they would go on the bar (normally)...parallel with my shoulders..

The bench works your triceps so logically they should be easier to do.

thanks
my football coach tells me to put them out pretty far so i'm doing alot mor pecs and stuff but i'll try that. thanks

I guess the best way to describe that I would put them where the smooth metal is for youre hands, on that edge. Hope your using the same bar. It's more in line with your biceps I guess (if the bar is on your chest). It wouldn't really be parallel to your shoulders, just a little outside of that. FWIW I got a compliment on my pecs on Monday so something worked lol.

lol
"yeah, i work out"
haha

yeah i'll do that next time i'm in gym.
