Can I take upper division classes for something that I'm not majoring in?
For example, I'm going to be an English major, but I'm really interested in specific upper division courses offered by Political Science and Philosophy and Afro-American Studies and Chicano Studies. Obviously I can't major in all of these- but can I still take the courses?

If not, I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M GOING TO DO because honestly I'm going to college to learn a lot of stuff I didn't get to learn in high school..

Yes of course. I am taking a film course this quarter and it’s awesome (basically watching Disney cartoons for 6 hours a week). I’m a biology major.

Yep, you need 60 units of upper division credit in order to graduate, and most likely your major won’t cover all of this on its own. Lots of upper division classes aren’t restricted or anything so you’re free to take them, and some count as GEs so you can double up on fulfilling your requirements. Taking a film class is definitely recommended.

Thanks so much guys! I only asked cause I read a post on CC a while ago about how at some of the UC’s upper division poly sci and history courses were restricted to only people in those majors. But thanks for the help I appreciate it c:

Sometimes upper div courses, like those in pol sci and history, are restricted to department majors and minors on the first pass for enrollment, opening up to all majors some time after then. So as long as you meet the course and standing prerequisites, you should be able to take pretty much whatever you want as long as it doesn’t fill up too soon.

Oh alright thanks for the info! I have another question, is it possible to double major AND double minor at ucla if they’re all in the humanities/north campus? If not what about double major and minor or major and double minor?

Yes, it is possible to double major and double minor as long as you can get it all done within your 4 years as a freshman admit (or have a petition granted for a longer time), and they don’t all have to be just in humanities/north campus.

Yes, the responses are all correct. I was an English major, but had a lot of interest in political science, French, and theatre arts. The ONLY time I couldn’t get into a class was in Theatre Arts, which was really competitive – we had to audition for the class and I remember the professor wanted me in, but was forced to take the theatre arts majors first, darn!

But I never had a problem with the others. And my husband, who was a poli sci major, took a ton of upper division English classes.

We were like you – we wanted a well rounded education!
