On the off chance that anyone else on this forum is waiting on a notice from upper division Nursing … does anyone have any insight as to when these decisions will go out? And why the delay? NJMOM3 and I are going crazy! It’s completely beyond my comprehension as to why they wait so long when these kids college plans- for next semester even- just days away, are waiting in the wings. If anyone knows something, please share… much appreciated!
I know this is from last year but here we sit almost exactly a year later and we are in the same boat as you were last year! D received an email this afternoon basically stating that they will send out emails after 5 pm tomorrow. IMHO, that is just downright cowardly of the nursing department. Classes start on Monday and if these students aren’t accepted into upper division then they will need to make schedule changes. If the critieria is truly just GPA based, there is no reason that the students couldn’t have been notified right after final grades were due. So they send out notifications after business hours so they can’t take any calls from students with questions about the decision. Disappointed is an understatement. Not to mention how appalled I am at the terrible spelling mistakes in the email sent today! Very unprofessional.
^ hey luvmiballerina , I hope you have finally heard something !! And hope it was good news! The nursing program is a very good one but I can tell you that it doesn’t get any easier and there are some definite frustrations …make sure D is prepared for a very very busy and pretty stressful jr year …I really hope you got good news!! That wait was excruciating .
No, we haven’t heard anything yet! I am so irritated with the leaders of this college! There is absolutely no reason to do this to the students if, in fact, it is strictly GPA based! An excel spreadsheet could have provided this information as soon as final grades were due from fall semester!
Oh my gosh !! I agree with you …I think we found out like a day or two before she went back last year …it was awful …do they still have to choose between fall
And summer too ?
Finally got an email at 8:00pm. Sadly, she did not get into upper division. It seriously pisses me off that they wait this late to notify students when there are financial aid and scheduling issues and classes start on Monday. D is actually a junior since she changed to nursing later. Thankfully she did apply to other programs and has been accepted to Anderson University’s Accelerated Bachelor’s of Nursing program which she will enter in May and then finish in Aug 2017. But in the meantime, we have alot of scheduling and financial aid questions that we obviously can’t get answers to until after spring classes have started! This is mostly definitely USC’s loss…they are losing a very dedicated student leader and passionate future nurse. She has been an orientation leader, is currently an RM and has been an executive in her sorority. She will be an amazing nurse! Maybe one day USC will learn that GPA alone does not make a good nursing student.
to luvmiballerina, so very sorry to hear about your daughters situation. Ugh a nightmare. My daughter will be in pre nursing and we will be going thru the same scenario when she applies to upper division. Not sure if she will make it either. Can you post your daughters gpa (if you don’t mind). Other students too so we can see what the nursing school is looking for as far as GPA. Do you know the lowest GPA accepted? Worried! Is there a wait list or any opportunity to appeal the decision? Best of luck to your daughter, she sounds like an involved, passionate Gamecock leader.
@luvmiballerina …so sorry to hear that!! Glad she has a plan b…it sounds like she will make a wonderful nurse no matter which route she takes to get there !
Thanks, NJMOM3 and zoe411! Somehow I think she will be better off in the long run because of this. She has spoken with 2 of her nursing professors today who both told her it is USC’s loss that she will be leaving. I am sad that she has given so much of herself to this university that she loves but will not graduate from. But she is going to a program with a cohort of only 20-25! How amazing is that? And they have the only human cadaver lab for nursing students in the state! She is super excited about that. Plus it’s closer to home. Just hate the way it’s done and the timing and I will be contacting the program about that.
@luvmiballerina … so sorry to hear this! I agree it should not be just based on GPA. Other programs look at whether or not you have your CNA , community service and other factors. And b/c it’s just GPA, it should not take as long as they take to notify you. When my son applied, I told him to put Fall as first option but also have Summer as 2nd option (some students put Fall or nothing)… but adding Summer gives a better chance.
@zoe411 … my son is a junior in the program with NJMOM3’s daughter. He got in the fall semester with 3.6 GPA. He said he knows someone who got in the summer semester with a 3.4x but also knows someone with a 3.4x (?) who only chose fall and did not get in (they only wanted fall, no summer consideration). It is very competitive and stressful.
@NJMOM3 … son’s PSYCH clinical this semester is in Rock Hill which is almost an hour and a half drive!! They have to leave about 5:30 AM to get there on time!
@coleman4: thx, your info was very helpful! Summer session, can u explain better? Some colleges have fall/spring admit dates. Does summer entrance into upper division nursing mean a 5th year of college?
Spoke w staff, upper division nursing results: 257 applicants and 171 admitted In most recent round.
Average GPA 3.74.
Congrats to those who were accepted. Obv a very rigorous and competitive program.
Does anyone know if the 3.74 Average GPA is the overall GPA or the “Nursing Core” GPA
@coleman4 Not sure if this forum is still being monitored but here’s hoping. Congratulations to your son for getting into this competitive program! The waiting is an enormous amount of stress in itself. My daughter is currently applying this fall, would you recommend placing summer as the first choice and fall as the second choice or vice versa?
A new mom here who’s daughter possibly will be attending USC in fall 2017 for nursing. How happy is everyone with the lower division? I’ve heard mixed reviews. Just trying to gather as much info before we finalize our decision.
